2021 Christmas Open Show

SATURDAY 4th December 2021
The Old Mill Hall, Grove, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 7LB

Our main show judge, breed specialist Lianne Marsden, had drawn an entry of 52 dogs to our show, which was returning after skipping a year courtesy of COVID.

We’d like to thank everyone who came to our show in these testing times and helped to make a lovely Christmas atmosphere throughout the day and supported our club shop,  the BHI stand, the raffle and the kitchen. We would also like to thank Happy Dog for their ongoing and generous sponsorship of our Open show again, we especially appreciate this in these difficult times.

We’d also like to thank the people who helped the committee stage the event, Sam Avery, David Robertson, Jeanette Green, Abbie Manix, Carl, Alexis and Joe and especially Oliver and Katie who helped keep the kitchen going all day.

Lianne found her Best In Show in the Best Bitch in Julie and Mick Bramble’s Shirdees Me and My Girl with Best Opposite Sex & Res BiS going to her litter brother Nikki Cotton’s Ch Shirdees Greatest Showman at Jukesbern.

Best Puppy in Show was Steve, Jeanette and Emily Green’s Waldershelf Gin and Tonic making her show debut today at just 6 months and she completed a great first show by also being awarded Reserve Best Bitch.

Best Veteran in Show was won by Olga Vaychkus and Arunas Vaickus’s Flintas Kalnu Suo at Berneroso ShCM (Imp LT)

Completing the ‘Best Off’ list as Reserve Best Dog was Rebecca King, Liz Dedman and Jackie Green’s Joseph vom Durrbachler Wald at Arvella JW

MAIN SHOW JUDGE’S REPORT by Lianne Marsden (Trudaleaze)

What an honour to judge the GB club show at Grove – one day shy of a year later than planned – thanks Mr Covid – but so worth the wait. Some beautiful dogs present, where in some classes I was spoilt for choice. I’d be happy to take any of my winners home.

I found no bad mouths, a couple of slightly short tails and temperaments on the whole were pleasing. Presentation was good and all the dogs were clean, tidy and not overdone. I was particularly pleased with my dog line up.

One point I feel I must raise is that the floor of the hall did the dogs no favours at all – a lot of the dogs were not happy nor confident moving on the polished floor, most moved close behind when structurally they should not – a suggestion if the club uses this hall again is that mats are put down to give a truer impression of movement.

Best in show – I genuinely, honestly, hand on heart, had no idea that my Best Dog and Best Bitch were litter mates – they are so different yet so alike and I  adored them both.  However, the bitch stole my heart when she strutted into the ring in her class and my eye just kept coming back to her and she couldn’t be denied.

Thank you to all the exhibitors who made the journey and took my decisions with such good grace.

Minor Puppy Dog (2:1)

1] Meakin’s Bernsego Surburban (imp RUS) 8 month old baby who was thoroughly enjoying himself. Darkly marked but still attractive head, eyes tight and good ear placement. Narrow in front at this stage and a tad bum high, he is good for bone and has a pleasing overall shape. Super temperament.

Puppy Dog (0)

Junior Dog (3:1)

1] Miles Jaybiem Only Making  Plans 16 months, solidly built boy, very cobby and strong.  Well developed for his young age, he has a good head with classic markings. Rich thick coat. Good depth of front & chest, legs strong with excellent bone, excellent angulation and tight feet. He didn’t like the floor but when settled he moved well coming and side – away appeared close.

2] Peacocke’s Bobb vom Durrbachler Wald TAF NAF 13 month old boy, not as developed as 1 but with lovely bone. Masculine head with tight eyes and strong muzzle. Correct length of neck, deep chest and good spring of ribs. Nicely rounded rump with good tailset. Well angulated with good driving hocks and good turn of stifle. Another who appeared close behind and didn’t like the floor but his side gait and coming were correct.

Yearling Dog (3:1)

1] Green’s Waldershelf Fame’N Fortune 20 month old lovely shaped boy. Superb bone. Mature head, good eyes and ears placement.  Strong straight muzzle, tight lips. Good length of neck, deep in chest with enough width. Straight topline, nicely rounded rump and correct tailset. Deep spring of ribs. Strong legs, well up on his patterns and tight cat feet. Balanced throughout. Moved well and held his topline.

2] Miles Jaybiem Only Making  Planswinner of Junior Dog

Novice Dog (0)

Graduate Dog (4:1)

1] Peacocke’s Bobb vom Durrbachler Wald TAF NAF2nd in Junior Dog

2]  Austen’s Kernow Blue Mist Just 2 years old, maturing slowly – still needs to grow into himself. Good head & length of neck. Strong overall shape but perhaps a tad long.  Bit down on his pasterns today. In good hard condition and he has a lush coat, well presented. Today he tended to throw his front a bit but side gait was good.  Happy temperament and confident boy.

3]  Game’s Chippis Diamond Wizard

Post Graduate Dog (4:1)

1] Hallam’s Napoleon vom Durrbachler Wald at Waldershelf (imp NLD) 4 year old darkly marked mature boy with a wonderful kind expression. Solidly built with lovely width and depth, good head. Tight eyes, good ear placement, Lovely strong neck, hard muscled condition. Deep spring of ribs, rounded rump and correct tail. Hind angulation is pleasing and he moved well. He may appear too heavy for some but I liked him a lot. Excellent temperament.

2] O’Toole’s Fortonpark Talk Of The Town 22 month old boy with the broadest of fronts and he has a lovely head. Developing nicely, he has good bone, longer in body. Straight hard topline and well muscled throughout. Lovely temperament. Well marked and lovely coat. Movement like so many today was close behind but coming and side were classic.

3] Rodriguex & Otero Scutt’s Homer De Llobu Astur (Imp Esp)

Limit Dog (3:1)

1]  Cotton’s Kernow Billy No Mates at Jukesbern 3 year old beautiful well coated boy. Excellent bone and shape – loved his cobbiness and his happy attitude. Only 3 years but still not finished. Deep in chest, lovely front.  Good neck, good length of rib, nicely rounded rump, tailset correct. Up on his pasterns and alert. Very well put together young boy he has a pleasing on the eye, well muscled and well schooled.

2] Game’s Chippis Diamond Wizard 5 year old lovely, calm boy. Smaller than winner, he has a slightly narrow head when compare to winner but his eyes and ears are good. Longish neck, well muscled throughout. Enough bone for size, excellent temperament. Movement was a tad wide coming but side gait was good. Lovely thick coat and rich colouring.

Open Dog (4:1)

Hardest class of the day – these 3 could change places any day!  All a credit to their owners and breeders – I really was splitting hairs with these three most handsome boys.

1] Cotton’s CH Shirdees Greatest Showman at Jukesbern 2 year old mature boy is pristine condition – his coat is glorious and he is so well muscled underneath. Lovely all male head, well developed but still more to come. Nice tight almond shaped eyes, good ear set, well defined stop and tight straight muzzle. Deep and broad in chest, strong neck of correct length. Straight hard topline which he held on the move, nice round rump, correct tailset and good angulation behind. The tightest of cat like feet. Excellent bone throughout. His movement is true and workmanlike, he could easily do a days work. But this boy has more – he knows how to show himself and to hold himself, he is so attentive to his handler they really are a joy to watch. A happy boy whose tail never stopped, he has a spark about him, he clearly enjoys being in the limelight and I’m sure he will be in the spotlight many more times. Delighted to award him Best Dog and Reserve Best In Show.

2] King, Green & Dedman’s Joseph vom Durrbachler Wald at Arvella JW (imp NLD) So much to love about this 5 year old lad. He is a solid working boy with a glorious coat, well marked.  More finished than winner, he has a lovely broad head, tight eyes, ear placement is good, strong straight muzzle. Good length of neck, deep and broad in his chest and his legs are strong with excellent bone. Topline is straight, hard and he kept this on the move. He has a good rump and correct tailset. Well angulated and strong from behind, he moved with ease from all angles. Lovely well muscled condition and excellent presentation. Just unfortunate to come up against the winner today but another who is a joy to behold. Pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog.

3] Miles Jaybiem Modus Operandi JW

Veteran Dog (1:0)

1] Vaychus & Vaickus’ Flintas Kalnu Suo at Bernaroso ShCM (imp LT) 8 Years young boy who was very full of himself today – and why not??? He is a tall lad who had left his coat at home but that meant he could hide nothing. Lovely head, broad and flat, muzzle starting to grey. His eyes are still tight and his ears placement is good. Good width of chest and he is broad throughout with enough bone. He was slightly down on his pasterns today but his movement was still true and he gave the youngsters a good run for their money. Best Veteran In Show.

Veteran Bitch (3:3)

Minor Puppy Bitch (2:0)

1] Green’s Waldershelf Gin & Tonic Oh my – 6 months and 2 days – she is something else. Ok, a little shy at first but this was her first show but she overcame her shyness quickly to show her little paws off. A gorgeous overall shape, broad and deep chest, head a bit narrow but good maturity for age, classic markings, strong neck of correct length, straight, solid topline, nicely rounded rump, correct tailset, excellent turn of stifle, tight cat feet. She strides out with ease, tail flowing behind. Her movement was so mature for one so young and she is at one with her handler. Once she gains her confidence there will be no stopping her. I will admit, I am not a fan of awarding top honours to one so young but in the challenge she earned her place and she would not be denied – she commanded your eye. Reserve Best Bitch, Best Puppy Bitch, Best Puppy In Show.

2] Price’s Akela Z labskeho Zatisi NAF 8 month old young girl who is at present, very raw. Not a confident girl to start with but her confidence grew. Bum high today, much longer in leg than one and not as together on the move.  Her head is starting to come and she has that sweet feminine expression. Good markings as lush thick coat.

Puppy Bitch (2:0)

1] Milune’s Elegant Daeneri at Oberlandbern 9 month old who is a lovely shape. Head coming along nicely, good length of neck, strong shoulders, deep in chest with good width. Straight topline, good rounded rump with correct tailset – her tail never stopped wagging – what a happy young lady she is!  Well marked and in pristine coat. Movement was good coming and side but she appeared close behind.

2] Price’s Akela Z labskeho Zatisi NAF2nd in Minor Puppy Bitch

Junior Bitch (3:1)

1] Peacocke’s Xophil vom Durrbachler Wald TAF NAF 16 month old girl who is much heavier that 2nd in this class. Wide and deep in chest, slightly long in length, well rounded rump with correct tail set, strong legs with tight feet. She benefits from a lovely head and the sweetest of expressions. Today she is in full dress, which, on appearance, makes her seem bum high but on examination this is not so – she has a thick lush coat – lots and lots of coat! Nicely marked and well handled. Her movement, like many today, was close behind but front and side gait were correct.

2] Wood’s Bern haus on Oka Floriana for Bernora 11 month old young lady who is much more raw than winner. Narrow in front and not as deep in chest.  She has a pretty head and expression, decent length of neck and strong straight back. Correct tail placement. Legs a little gangly but this will improve with age, tight feet. Not as together with movement as 1 but has time on her side.

Yearling Bitch (5:3)

1] Vaychus & Vaickus’ Bernaroso Born To Be 20 month old young lady maturing as she should. Deep chested with good shoulder placement. Strong legs and tight feet. Good length ration and well rounded rump with decent tail set. Well bent stifles. Happy excitable girl who moved well coming and side. Lots to like.

2] Rothery’s Kernow Going Back To My Roots at Glamrock 21 months, taller bitch than winner.  A little narrow in front, shorter in neck and smaller in head but she has a lovely expression. Deep in chest, strong legs, feet not as tight.  Happy girl, movement was good – close away, straight coming with good side gait.

Novice Bitch (4,0)

1] Green’s Waldershelf Gin & Tonic  – winner of Minor Puppy Bitch

2] Peacocke’s Xophil vom Durrbachler Wald TAF NAF – winner of Junior Bitch

3] Meakin’s Salentum Terrae Amber (Imp ITA) 2 year old girl, whose head is coming along. Quite narrow in front. She needs to fill her frame a bit more but she will get there. Strong straight topline. Good markings and coat. Appeared narrow coming and going. Confident happy girl.

4] William’s Tinland Zeta Rose

Graduate Bitch (3:1)

1] Milune’s Khaleesi Z deikowei Doliny  Loved this 2 year old young lady. Strong yet feminine girl. She has a lovely head with good eye, well defined stop and good ear placement. Maturing nicely, she scores well in chest with width and depth, topline is straight and held. She is strong and cobby throughout. Excellent markings and well presented, Her movement is true and she has a presence about her. I just loved her and she pushed hard for top honours today – I’m sure her time will come.

2] William’s Tinland Zeta Rose 2 year old bitch, much slighter than winner. Pretty head with sweet expression. Longer in length. Good rounded rump and correct tailset. Well covered in jacket. Movement not as together, excellent temperamen

Post Graduate Bitch (3:1)

1] Brambles Shirdees Me and My Girl  2 year old beautiful girl who grabs your attention and screams “Here I am”. Not the biggest of girls but her proportions throughout are balanced and correct. Strong & totally feminine in head with tight eyes, lovely ear set, length of neck is proportionate to size, deep broad chest, excellent spring of ribs, strong straight topline, well rounded rump, good tail placement, well angulated, tight feet. Beautifully marked and presented in full jacket. She did not like the floor one bit and it took her a while to settle but when she did, she moved a picture from all angles. I love her overall shape and she has a demeanour about her which just makes you smile – she is exactly, to the finest point, what I was looking for and I had no qualms in awarding her the class, Best Bitch and ultimately Best In Show – I wish she was mine!

2] Williams Tinland Pink Sapphire 3½ year old girl who is much longer cast than 1.  Small but pretty head, well defined stop, long neck, slightly narrow in chest and not the width or depth as winner.  Good firm topline, tight feet. Movement was good although very close behind, side gait was a tad awkward but coming was true.

Limit Bitch (5:2)

1] King, Green & Dedman’s Olivia vom Durrbachler Wald (imp NLD) Another who did not like the floor. 3 year old mature girl who is strong yet quite feminine. She could do the job she was designed for with ease. Lovely head, with good tight eyes, good ear placement and a strong neck. Broad in chest with good depth. Straight strong topline. Excellent temperament and presentation Movement was good and true but today she just didn’t show herself off to advantage.

2]  Price’s Kyleburn Night Umbrette at Silvretta 6 Year old lady who is much smaller in stature than winner but lots to like. Feminine, mature head, tight almond eyes, slightly longer muzzle. She is broad in the chest has strong legs but appeared slightly down on her patterns today. Topline still strong and held on the move, good tailset. Her movement is strong and although lose behind she covered the ground with ease, Nice fit girl.

3] Harris’s Meadowpark Dancin On My Own

Open Bitch ( 4:3)

1] Miles Jaybiem Phoebe The Won. 26 month old lovely substantial girl. Well muscled throughout. Broad, flat skull, good developed stop.  Her neck appears short but on examination there is an abundance of coat hiding a strong neck of good length.  Deep chested with a lovely clean front. Tight feet. Deep in rib, slightly long. Solid topline held throughout. Lovely overall shape and movement was true but she just didn’t show herself off today. Shame as I really like her.

Special Awards Judge’s Report by Mr E Forsey (Muzoku).

I was both greatly honoured and excited to be offered the opportunity to judge the special awards classes for the BMD club of GB at their Golden Jubilee show, the general quality of the dogs entered shone through and I’m really looking forward to judging more of this beautiful breed in the future.

Special Members’ Puppy Award (3,1a)

1st S. J. & E. Green’s Waldershelf Gin & Tonic, A Lovely female youngster at her first show, a little timid at first but soon found her confidence.  Pretty expression on her balanced feminine head, strong neck and carried proudly on well angulated shoulders, level top line which she held perfectly on the move, good turn of stifle and in nice coat, definitely one to watch.

2nd R. & P. Meakin’s Bernsego Surburban (Imp RUS), 8 month old large sized male, clean head with good depth to muzzle and dark brown almond shaped eyes, narrow white blaze down a well-defined stop.  Nice length of neck and moderate angulation front and rear with good sized feet,  still young and just needs to tighten up on the move.

Special Members’ Junior Award (2,1a)

1st S. Peacocke’s Bobb vom Durrbachler Wald TAF NAF, although standing alone deserved his place, 14 month old well-constructed male of good size, clean markings and solid bone throughout, nice breadth of chest which reached the elbows, large round tight feet supporting his frame, slight rise over a moderate length loin, moved true in all aspects at a steady gait.

Special Members’ Post Graduate Award (8,3a)

1st S. J & E. Green’s Waldershelf Fame’N Fortune, 20 month old male with a soft broad masculine head, strong muzzle, well balanced to length of head and well defined stop with lovely soft dark brown eyes.  Large but compact body with short coupling, solid legs with slight slope to pasterns and tight round feet, nice turn of stifle, in good coat and moved effortlessly for such a large boy.

2nd R. & P. Meakin’s Salentum Terrae Amber (Imp ITA),  2 year old bitch of good height at withers, sweet expression, balanced features and well set triangular ears.  Good length of neck, well laid shoulders and moderate turn of stifle, level topline, longer in body than most, moved well, but, despite a good slope to croup, tendency to carry tail too high.

3rd R.R. Price’s Kyleburn Night Umbrette at Silvretta, 6 year old smaller but well-proportioned bitch,  compact and solid body with adequate bone for her size, soft feminine head and expression, good slop to shoulder and return of upper arm, depth of chest to elbows.  Moved with drive at the rear but could be cleaner on the towards.

Res G. & B.L. Williams Tinland Zeta Rose

VHC J.A. Harris’ Meadowpark Dancin’ On My Own

Special Members’ Open Award (6,3)

1st R. King, J. Green, & E. Dedman’s Joseph vom Durrbachler Wald at Arvella (JW (imp NLD), 5 year old male with a pleasing head and soft expression, strong muzzle, well defined stop, solid neck but could be slightly longer, well laid shoulder with ample forechest, level topline with strong loin, well angulated rear,  moved true in all directions.

2nd G. & B.L. Williams Tinland Pink Sapphire, alert and playful 3 year old bitch,  moderate angulation throughout, good size of bone on legs, strong almost vertical pasterns and round feet.  Sufficient depth and breadth of chest.  Good length of rib and short coupling.

3rd O. Vaychus & A. Vaickus’ Flintas Kalnu Suo at Bernaroso ShCM (Imp LT) 8 year old male of good height and nice side profile to head and compact body, would like a little more breadth of head and body for the size of this boy.  Good bone and strong pasterns on tight feet.  Moved well while holding his topline level.
