Club Championship (with Limited Obedience) Show – Saturday 22 September 2018 at The Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park..

We weren’t so lucky with the early Autumn weather this year. The day dawned dry but cold and judging got underway outside but sadly by Graduate Dog and Post Graduate Bitch there was no avoiding the need to move inside the KC Building. The rings were ready to go so there was minimal disruption to the flow of the day and the show completed inside the hall.
Our Obedience judge Lynne Roberts and her sterling competitors remained outside though, only coming in at the end of the day for the results announcements.
Special thanks to Anese Tomkinson who came forward at very short notice to save the day & steward for the obedience judge.
Thanks to all stewards & all helpers and thanks to everyone that supported our show.
Dog judge Jackie Green and Bitch judge John Jakobsen agreed on their main winners of the day as follows:

Dog Judge’s Report by Jackie Green

I would like to thank the Committee of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Great Britain for their kind invitation to judge at this Championship Show and, most importantly, I would like to thank all the exhibitors for giving me their entry and allowing me the pleasure of judging their dogs.

I would also like to express my thanks to my Ring Stewards, Wendy Smee and Michelle Colman, who made my day run so smoothly and to the ‘Show Team’ who provided such excellent hospitality.

I found the quality of the dogs, generally, to be of good standard and with the exception of a couple of classes my placings were easily filled. Temperaments were also good and although some of my youngsters were rather playful all bar one stood firmly for assessment. Presentation of the dogs was excellent with only a couple of exhibits not well groomed. The majority of exhibits were well handled but a couple of dogs would definitely have been higher placed had they been a little better ‘schooled’. I think it unfortunate that in the outside ring there was something of great interest to ‘The Boys’ which may well have caused some erratic movement and this did affect placings.

Although dentition was generally good with no over or undershot mouths there appeared to be more level bites than I remembered from previous appointments. Our Illustrated Breed Standard says that a complete scissor bite is the ideal but a level bite should be tolerated. I mention this purely on the number of exhibits that displayed this particular characteristic.

In my line up of unbeaten dogs I found it interesting that three of the four dogs in serious contention for top honours were sired by the same dog, Ch Meadowpark Vertigo.

My Challenge Certificate winner is an impressive example of our breed demonstrating all the qualities a Bernese Mountain Dog should possess, strong and sturdy, active and alert with excellent bone and effortless movement. Together with John Jacobsen we were pleased to award him Best in Show. We were also pleased to award his son Best Puppy in Show.

Minor Puppy Dog (3 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Hartley Mair & Dybdall’s Carraigbern Lasting Impression For Meadowpark (IKC)

A baby puppy, six months and one week of age, who thoroughly enjoyed himself. Good head and expression, with dark almond shaped eye. Rich dark tan. Good length of leg, a little short in upper arm but with a level topline and nicely rounded rump. Good tail set and of correct length. Moved well for age.

I enjoyed judging this class and thought all the dogs critiqued were of good quality.

1st Griffiths, Orme & Miles’ Jaybiem With N’without Y’zeus JW

Medium sized male, balanced and compact. Lovely head and expression. Good depth of chest. Good shoulder placement, level topline and broad strong hindquarters with nicely rounded rump. With short rear pasterns he covered the ground effortlessly with powerful drive from the rear.
2nd Gurney’s Monalou Just Call Me Oleg

Balanced, medium sized male of good type, lovely head and kind expression. Dark, almond shaped eye and good ear set. Correct shoulder placement and well sprung ribs. Strong upper thigh. Short rear pasterns. Nice tight feet. He held his level topline on the move. Good front and rear movement.
3rd Jefferson’s Shirdees Fast And Furious

Medium sized male, more length of body than 1st and 2nd and with good bone. Masculine head with good expression and ear set. Good front with broad chest, well laid back shoulders and good angulation to the rear. Lovely short rear pasterns. Nice tight feet. Moved well.
Mid Limit Dog (8, 2)

A close decision between 1st and 2nd. I preferred the compact and balanced body of 1st and the movement of 2nd. As I think that the 9:10 ratio, which our breed standard states, is of critical importance I made the decision to award as follows:

1st Law’s Ecalpharas Gold

A quality medium sized male, balanced and of good proportions although carrying more weight than he should. Lovely head and gentle expression. Good depth of chest with well laid back shoulders, level topline and good spring of rib. Nicely rounded rump, well bent stifles, short rear pasterns. Nice tight feet. Moved well.
2nd Connelly’s Shirdees Top Gun

Another promising male. Medium sized, with masculine head and good expression. Correct front assembly. Good length of neck, well laid-back shoulders and well-muscled hind quarters. Good tail set. Excellent movement with good reach and drive.
3rd Bridges’ Deerpark Traveling Man V Kernow (Imp USA)

Medium sized male of good general proportions. Pleasing head with gentle expression. Correct eye shape and colour. Correct ear set. Well placed shoulders and correct length of neck. Level topline, nicely rounded croup and good angles to rear. Moved well.
Res Akehurst’s Jesterbrock Alpine Storm
Limit Dog (8, 2)

1st Gurney’s Monalou Russian Ambassador

A quality male of excellent breed type. Compact and balanced with good bone. Lovely head with gentle expression, rich dark tan and almond shaped dark eyes. Good straight front legs with compact feet. Excellent shoulder placement, level topline, good spring of rib, nicely rounded rump giving good rear angulation. Short hocks. Moved well and with drive. Reserve. C.C.
2nd King’s Elnside The Grandmaster ShCM

Pleasing male, balanced and with good bone. Good head and expression. Correct ear set and broad skull. Strong medium length neck, correct shoulder placement and good spring of rib. Nicely rounded rump with good bend of stifle. Nice tight feet. Positive movement front and rear.

3rd Hughes’ Waldershelf Causing Kaos

Although the head was not as broad as winners the expression was gentle with good eye shape and colour. Correct front with good shoulder placement and length of neck. Level topline but slightly sloping to rear. Moved well.
Open Dog (6)

1st Baldwin’s Meadowpark First Class For Fortonpark

A lovely young male, medium sized and of good type. Balanced and compact with good bone and substance. Attractive head with good expression. Good front with well-placed shoulders, level topline and strong, well-muscled hindquarters. Covered the ground well with positive movement front and rear.
2nd Rothery’s Glamrock Graffiti Artist ShCM

Medium sized male with good bone, balanced and of good proportion. Pleasing head with good expression and lovely dark eye. Correct shoulder placement, level topline and good spring of rib. Short rear pasterns. Nice tight feet. Moved well.
3rd Scott’s Welshbern One Vision At Scobern ShCM

Smaller male but balanced and of correct proportions with good bone size. Pleasing head with correct ear set. Nice deep chest with good shoulder placement, level topline and nicely rounded rump. Moved well.
Champion Dog (3)

1st Hartley-Mair & Dybdall’s Ch Meadowpark High Class

Above medium sized male of excellent breed type. A strong, sturdy dog of substance. Masculine head with good expression and nice dark eye. Deep chest with good length of leg and correct length of upper arm. Good shoulder placement. Level topline and good spring to ribs. Nicely rounded croup, well developed thighs and good rear angulation. Short rear pasterns and nice tight feet. With good reach in front and powerful rear drive he moved with ease. Excellent rapport with handler. Not in full coat but this could not detract from his overall quality. C.C. and Best in Show.
2nd Baldwin’s Ch Guiness Record From Christofland To Fortonpark (Imp Cze)

A well balanced male of good type. Good head with gentle expression, dark eye and good ear set. Excellent front assembly with correct length of upper arm. Good shoulder placement, level topline and nicely rounded rump. Well bent stifles and short rear pasterns. Covered the ground well with positive movement front and rear.
3rd Gopal’s Ch Collansues Secret Bridges

Above average male with good bone and substance. Masculine head with good expression. Correct shoulder placement and level topline. Would have preferred more rear angulation. Nice feet. Moved well coming and going but excelled in profile with good reach and drive.

Veteran Dog (2, 1)
