The 5th biennial Swiss Party in aid of the Club’s rescue fund was held for the fourth time courtesy of our generous hosts and Club members Stephen and Aileen Nesbitt in the lovely setting of North Standen Estate in Hungerford. After the appalling weather of the previous weeks, the weather gods were definitely on our side as there were a few dry days earlier in the week and then the three days prior to the event were scorchers so the field and surrounding areas were dry. A torrential thunderstorm on the Saturday evening did not make any impact and in fact it cleared the humid air and the Sunday could not have been more perfect for dogs and humans – warm and dry with a cooling breeze. Thank you to those in charge up there!

Visitors were able to start their day with a brunch of hot sausages in rolls with a cup of tea or coffee. I think some also made an early start on the wonderful array of home made cakes which were very generously donated by the attendees. The venue soon filled up with people and their dogs, mostly Bernese but a smattering of other breeds as well. To start off the day we had nine carts from the Midland carting group parading with their beautifully decorated carts and Stephen Nesbitt did the honours and presented them all with their goodie bags. A huge thank you to them for coming along to support the event as some of those who attended had not previously seen the carting side of our beautiful breed.

After this the day got into full swing with all the fun classes which were well supported and ably judged by Sandra Constable who was kept in check by steward Sam Avery. Handsome dogs, pretty bitches, cute puppies, dogs smiling or doing high fives or showing their appealing eyes – something for everyone to join in or just watch. There was a wonderful array of prizes on offer on the “chose your own prize” raffle and there was a good selection of dog related items for sale on the bring and buy stalls. Lunch was a delicious hog roast followed by brownies and fresh fruit salad for dessert and, of course, more cake! During the lunch break we also had a mass dog walk around the field led by the carters.

After the lunch break there was a parade of veteran dogs and then the parade for the rehomed dogs that had been brought along to show everyone what lovely dogs they are. We had 17 dogs booked in but unfortunately on the day three could not make it. We heard the story of each dog and each one was presented with his or her goodie bag by Toni Rose who is a loyal supporter of the event. These stories always bring a tear to the eye and we are indebted to their new families for giving them such loving homes and for bringing them to meet us all. Without exception the rescued dogs were happy and devoted to their new families and in immaculate condition. One “dog-family” of three boys had a lovely reunion after being in their new homes for many months. Meg was the oldest rescue at 10 ¼ years, followed by Jazz who is 9 years. Both were enjoying their family day and looking superb. The auction of donated items followed and this raised the grand sum of £385.

Then, on with the games, amid much hilarity thanks to Sandra, our hard-working judge – these included recall over sausages, fastest recall, Markie and spoon race etc. Those taking part and those watching had great fun and, yes, some did manage the recall over sausages but not many!

All in all a fantastic day in a super venue, great weather but, most importantly, attended by supporters of the Club’s rescue, many ”old” faces but also a good number of new ones too. Thank you to everyone, you all made the hard work worthwhile and contributed to the fabulous and record-breaking total of £1,695 which will be put to good use helping Bernese in need of help.
