Spring Open Show 2023

Club Open Show Sunday 23rd April

Our first Open Show of the year was held at the long established regular venue of Grenoside Community Centre near Sheffield. Our Main Show Judge was Chelsea Hickling, who many will know as a regular at our club events both visiting and helping out, and our Special Member’s Award judge was Phil English. We thank Chelsea for joining us today and judging in a friendly relaxed manner and also for the special prizes she provided for the main winners.

In these difficult economic times of shrinking entries and falling attendances we would like to thank everyone who supported our show in any way, not just those who entered and attended but those who sponsored rosettes and prizes, donated raffle prizes, bought tickets and made donations.

Thank you to all those who spent money at the club shop or indulged in the fare available from the kitchen, every little bit helps support the club.

We would also like to thank all the people who helped stage our show, helping to set up and clear away and helping in the kitchen and all areas in between. With such a small committee we really do depend heavily on our helpers to put all our events on so we are really grateful for all the assistance we get.

Main Show Judges Report by Chelsea Hickling

Thank you to the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Great Britain for inviting me to judge the Spring Open Show. I had a wide variety of dogs to assess and I was really happy with my principle winners. A special mention to the oldest dog who is a real credit to her breeders and owners. Thank you to my stewards Emily English and Donna Whincup for keeping the ring moving smoothly and to everyone who entered for their support on the day. I had several exhibits today that I feel would have benefited from a change in ring surface, hopefully I will have an opportunity to asses them again in the future.

Veteran Dog 2 (0 Abs)

  1. Hughes Ch. Waldershelf Causing Kaos ShCM

9 year old good sized male full of character.  Masculine head with flat skull, correct ear set, well defined stop. Broad chest, depth of brisket reaching the elbow. Good spring of rib and enough forechest. Well angulated behind. Stood on round and compact feet. Moved with enthusiasm covering the ground well

  1. Fairclough’s Monalou Spirit of Discovery ShCM

8 year old compact male, well turned out.  Correct head proportions.  Medium length of neck leading into firm straight back and a smoothly rounded rump.  Well boned.  Showing his age on the move but maintained a steady gait and carried his tail well.

Minor Puppy No Entries

Puppy Dog 2 (1 abs)

  1. Miles’ Jaybiem Noah Fence

11 month old male developing nicely. Head strong but not exaggerated. Dark almond shaped eyes, plenty of depth and breadth of muzzle without any heaviness. Good angulation in the hindquarters with a good bend of stifle. Thighs strong and well muscled. Stood on straight legs front and rear. Good colour distribution in his markings. A little unsettled on the move due to a change in handlers but by BPIS was more focused and I was happy to award Best Puppy in Show.

Junior Dog 2 (1 Abs)

  1. Miles’ Jaybiem Noah Fence

Novice Dog 1 (0 Abs)

  1. Cope’s Firenze Balou My Buddy (Imp Pol) NAF

2 ½ year old male with a strong masculine head, flat skull and correct dentition, good eye shape but to be critical they colour to be darker. Broad chest with good spring of rib and compact loin. Moved with enthusiasm but would like to see much more drive and strength in the rear. Very happy attitude and was showed and turned out nicely.

Not Bred by Exhibitor 1 (1 Abs)

Graduate Dog 3 (0Abs)

  1. Spencer’s Bernoulli Daniel Craig at Panicky (Imp RUS)

Appealing masculine head with a kind expression. Flat skull, dark eyes, enough stop and correct ear set. Medium length neck leading to strong level topline and well-rounded rump. Enough bone and good angles fore and aft. Handled well and presented today in good coat. Showed good reach and drive in profile movement, maintaining a level topline.

  1. Copeland’s Kernow Dollar Promises at Maxjabar

Typey male with strong, masculine head with nice expression. Correct eye and earset. Medium length neck leading into a good topline and rounded rump. Correct tailset. Good spring of rib and depth of chest but forechest is still developing. Well boned with compact feet. Tight decision between 1 and 2 as both young developing males but preferred the movement of 1st today.

  1. Manix’s Faithful Nero My Buddy at Northshore (Imp Pol)

Nearly 3 years old Medium sized male in full coat. Attractive head with dark almond shaped eyes, ears set well and used to his advantage, correct dentitition. Enough stop and slight furrow. Good amount of forechest and depth of brisket.  Moved out well with good drive in the rear but moved wide at front today.

Post Graduate Dog 1 (1 Abs)

Limit Dog 5 (0 Abs)

  1. Manix’s Waldershelf Fame N’Fortune

3 year old male of correct 9:10 proportions and everything where it should be. Stood fore square on tight, compact feet. Good bone and strong straight front legs. This dogs strength is his movement. Balanced and fluid from all angles. Reaching out well in the front with drive in the hindquarters. Good clean markings and turned out well to his advantage. Pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog.

  1. Miles’ Jaybiem Only Making Plans

Strong typey male, masculine in every sense. Strong head, flat skull, dark almond shaped eye. Deep muzzle, tight lips and correct dentition. Strong front assembly with brisket reaching to the elbow and a good spring of rib and compact loin. Positive on the move with clean front and rear movement.

  1. Wakeland’s Kernow Yester Years at Bramikdel.

Typey male of good size and substance. Well-proportioned body with level topline. Strong masculine head with flat skull, well defined stop and straight muzzle. Strong straight front legs, standing on compact feet to be critical would prefer stronger pasterns. Felt like he didn’t fully settle on the move which made him harder to assess than 1 and 2.

Open 3 (2 Abs)

  1. Atherton’s Valentinn vom Durrbachler Wald (Imp Ned)

Strong, sturdy impressive young male really coming into his prime. Balanced in overall appearance with correct proportions. Strong masculine head of good proportions with good depth and breadth. Correct dark eye and good earset making a handsome pleasing expression. Muscular neck leading into firm straight back and rounded rump.  Strong, well muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles.  Good tail carriage. A worthy winner despite standing alone in this class and it my honour to award him BEST IN SHOW.

Veteran Bitch 2 (0 Abs)

  1. Watson’s Stepdashar Sommer Girl

Approaching 10 years, strong but feminine bitch of lovely breed type. Always standing fore square on strong pasterns. Plenty of forechest and brisket reaching the elbow. Short coupled, with rounded rump.  Correct tailset. Moved very well for her age and I was pleased to award her Best Veteran in Show.

  1. Hallam’s Meadowpark The Temptress.

Over 10 years old and the oldest dog entered today. Presented in full coat and good condition. Feminine head with slight furrow and flat skull. Ears set well making for a nice expression. Good proportions and outline maintaining a level topline. Showing her age slightly on the move but was sympathetically handled.

Minor Puppy Bitch 1 (1 Abs)

Puppy Bitch 2 (1 Abs)

  1. Waring’s Nolpadia from Balihara Ranch

11 month old with correct body proportions but standing a little bum high today. Good bone, tight feet and strong pasterns. Compact body and good rear angulation. Would benefit from some ring training as she was a little unsettled on the move. A promising, substantial female with a large developing frame that needs time to fully mature.

Junior Bitch 2 (0 Abs)

  1. Spencers’ Nina Riomadea Grande at Paddy (Imp HRV)

Young female with good size, bone and substance. Good length of neck, level topline, rounded rump, correct tail set. Free standing parallel front and rear. To be critical would prefer more angulation in the rear but this will likely improve as she matures and fills her frame. Excellent temperament.

  1. Watson’s Stepdashar Magical Wish

Pretty bitch who was presented in good coat with good head and expression, dark eyes, flat skull, strong muzzle. Well developed body with good depth of chest and spring of rib, a little short in leg at the moment. Great attitude and eager to please, handled well.

Novice Bitch 1 (0Abs)

  1. Andrews Sweetheart Wales NAF

Correctly marked, medium sized female of good overall proportion, feminine head and correct dentition. Enough bone for size. Nice outline in profile but would prefer more breadth throughout. Very engaged and eager to please her handler. Excellent temperament.

Not Bred By Exhibitor 1 (1Abs)

Graduate Bitch 2 (1 Abs)

  1. Marsden & Robertson’s Kernow Glory Days at Trudaleaze.

A bitch with good breed type and strong bone. Strong head, flat skull, enough stop and slight furrow.  Straight muzzle with good depth.  Correct dentition and lips slightly developed.  Good length of neck and a compact well muscled body. Moved ok from the front but would prefer rear movement to be a bit stronger.

Post Graduate Bitch 5 (0 Abs)

  1. Wood’s Etterbern Fashion Trends

Medium sized feminine bitch of 2 years. Head correct with dark eye and good ear carriage. Flat skull and straight muzzle.  Medium length muscular neck leading into firm straight topline.  Clean over the withers. Good angulation, long sloping shoulders.  Fluid and balanced movement for all angles with correct tail carriage. Pleased to award her Reserve Best Bitch.

  1. Wilson’s Monalou Volley Vous at Blumental

Well proportioned bitch with pleasing outline. Good overall breed type with good bone and excellent coat. Strong head, with correct dark almond shaped eyes, correct dentition. To be critical I would personally prefer a more refined head. Moved well showing a balanced profile.

  1. Marsden & Roberstson’s Trudaleaze Ain’t I Fab You Lous

Shapely, well proportioned bitch with a pleasing outline. Overall balance in her appearance.  Head in proportion to her body, with Dark eye, flat skull, correct ear set. Clean markings. Whilst there’s lots to like she didn’t perform on the move today compared to 1st and 2nd

Limit Bitch 2 (1 Abs)

  1. Watson’s Stepdashar Winters Wish

6 year old mature bitch with overall shape and balance. Shown today in beautiful coat of good quality.  Broad oval shaped chest, well ribbed. Strong, straight front legs with elbows tight to the brisket.  Slightly rounded rump with good tailset. Moved well in all directions.

Open Bitch 4 (2 Abs)

  1. Spencer’s Ch Padiky Starr Studded Skye JW

6 year old showy bitch with lots of positives.  Enjoyed going over this girl as she is so nicely put together.  Strong with lots of bone.  Good angulation front and rear. Tight compact feet.  Muscular neck of medium length, clean over the withers, firm straight back.  Plenty of forechest, well sprung ribs.  Balanced on the move, looked like she could have gone all day. Handled perfectly. A worthy winner of Best Bitch and Reserve Best in show

2)         Marsden & Robertson’s Tickbern Valencia Avec Vellbern..

Mature 6 year old bitch with a strong broad head, dark eyes, strong muzzle and tight lips. Muscular medium length neck leading into firm straight topline. Good angulation front and rear. Enough bone for size and good spring of rib. Moved well, covering the ground with ease just unlucky to meet number 1 today.
