Our Open Show went ahead after a previous 24 hours that included a 12 hour long downpour that flooded the ground and seriously challenged the resolve of the organisers and some of our campers, especially those who arrived on Friday afternoon and evening and had tents to put up. However, the morning dawned with bright sunshine and the fantastic drainage capability of this ground, that we had seen previously, demonstrated itself again. The top surface quickly dried out and within a few hours of the sun coming up it was, for most of the show ground, as if the deluge of just hours before had never happened. What was anyone worried about!! I know it is stereotypically British to talk about the weather so much but it was such a stressful factor in the build up to the week-end that it provides therapy for me to talk about how well it all turned out! Hopefully the weather charm we enjoyed for many years at Grenoside has been transferred to this show’s new location.
The brilliant weather continued all day, even causing some to take some shelter for their dogs from the sunshine, this was unimaginable the previous night. The show was held under pretty constant blue skies but with just enough cloud to prevent any extreme temperatures which combined with the brilliant setting of this show ground, I think most people there would agree, it was a perfect day and setting to enjoy a show.
The opening of the show was marked by a parade of carters and we thank everyone who took part in this. The day and evening before’s weather had put pressure on all the preparations for today so the effort made to take part in this display was much appreciated.
Thank you to everyone who supported our show in anyway whether just spectating, sponsoring classes, exhibiting or helping to deliver it but especially everyone who helped prepare the show ground through the awful conditions of the week before and Friday particularly. This weekend would not happen without a huge amount of of volunteer effort, more of this to come in the overall Garden Party week-end reports.
We also wish to thank our generous Show sponsors Wellness CORE who provided all our winners with bags of their quality foods and were represented today by Jodie Randle who is in most of the photos of the winners below. Click on the link to discover more about their excellent range of products.
Thanks also go to the members who sponsor rosettes and prize money for our show. It really wouldn’t be the same without this help.
Our Main Show judge Ed Forsey said he really enjoyed his day and the main show winners are given below with full results below. Scroll down past the photos for his Judge’s report as well as the Special Members Award Photogrpahs and the judge’s report from Tony Paczkowski.

After the lunch break a couple of presentations were made before the commencement of the afternoon’s judging.
The first was to previous Club Chair Heather Head who retired from the committee at the recent AGM. Heather was unable to attend the AGM and this was the first opportunity to make this presentation so Club President (and now returning as Chairman as well) Steve Green presented Heather with a token of the club’s appreciation for her services over many years.
The second was to club member Judy Harris who has supported the club for forty years attending most events, including the AGMs, over that time and being well known to many members. The club had commissioned a personalised needle felt portrait of her current dog Peggy Sue from club member Lacey Abbott-Brown, which, I think it is very safe to say, Judy was delighted with, almost collapsing with the shock of the moment!

What an honour it was to be asked to judge at your lovely spring open show as part of your club weekend. It was fantastic to see so many exhibitors dressed up and presenting their dogs in the parade of carts at the opening of the show, a big round of applause to all of those that took part as it was a fantastic sight to behold and does set your breed apart.
I was super pleased with my entry and there were many lovely dogs, so I thank you all for braving the weather from the day before, which I was told was quite wet, to be there on what turned out to be a really pleasant day for the show.
It was nice to see the overall general quality and consistency in type for the breed with many excellent exhibits which puts you in good stead for the future of the breed. All exhibitors took their placings with true sportsmanship which again is a credit to the exhibitors who shared their dogs with me today.
CLASS: 1 – BABY PUPPY DOG (1)
1) S. & J. Green & E. English’s DEVAEL MI AMIGO AT WALDERSHELF (IMP ESP) NAF TAF – What a lovey youngster to start the day, well balanced throughout and constructed with solid bone and good angles to shoulder and rear turn of stifle. Masculine head with good solid markings, well proportioned depth of chest to height and level topline. Bouncy on the move but this is what a baby puppy should be enjoying his first show, looking forward to seeing this boy grow up into a mature male.
CLASS: 2 – BABY PUPPY BITCH (1)
1) S. Small’s MALINDIBEACH CARTIER – another nice youngster with a bright future im sure. Solid construction and a pretty head, slight blaze on head, nice furred ears, with a friendly expression, moderately angulated front and rear, good spring of rib, a little loose on the move currently which will improve with time.
BEST BABY PUPPY IN SHOW – S. & J. Green & E. English’s DEVAEL MI AMIGO AT WALDERSHELF (IMP ESP) NAF TAF
CLASS: 3 – VETERAN DOG (2)
1) S. & J. Green & E. English’s MATTHIAS VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT WALDERSHELF (IMP NLD) JW – 7 year old strong boy, balanced head with good markings, ears well furred good shape could be sightly higher set if being picky, head broad and with a friendly expression, strong neck, good lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, solid bone to legs with strong pasterns. Deep chest, strong coupling, nice turn of stifle, moved well in all aspects, slight tendency to raise tail when excited.
2) C. Hughes, J. Hughes, D. Hughes & D. Hughes’ CH WALDERSHELF CAUSING KAOS ShCM – excitable 10 year old with a good solid construction, head balanced proportions with typical Bernese markings, a little finer in breadth than 1st. Strong neck, moderate lay of shoulder, solid bone and nice pasterns with tight feet. Clean topline with strong underline, nice set to tail, moved well in all aspects.
CLASS: 4 – MINOR PUPPY DOG (1)
1) S. Mallet’s CODEBERN I’M YOUR MAN – Good sized MPD, Nice head with solid muzzle, strong markings and flat skull, well angulated front, good depth to chest, could be a little broader but this may come with time. Solid bone and strong pasterns, slight rise to croup, well-toned rear, tail curls slightly, moved well at times but excitable on the move and enjoyed his day a little to much by playing up the handler.
CLASS: 5 – PUPPY DOG (2)
1) J. Wright & D. Kirk’s ROESILBERN FORBIDN FORREST – quite a lean boy in general, head in balance, distinct stop, nice curve to occiput, neck well set on shoulders, good angulation and for chest in profile, forelegs true, feet without any white markings. Moderate rear angulation and straight hocks, moved true with a light action.
2) J & E Murphy’s ESSLINBERN MAXIMUS – Quite a nice boy on the stand, everything in balance, pretty but masculine head with strong muzzle. Good markings throughout. Well angulated front with solid bone and good sized round feet. Nice rear angulation, carrying too much weight currently and this showed on the move where he was lethargic and tending to drop into a pacing gait.
CLASS: 6 – JUNIOR DOG (3,1)
1) A. New’s ETTERBERN FOREVER FIRST – Nice male with a masculine head, broad and solid, ears good size and shape but could be a little higher set, strong muscular neck, good depth to chest and nice fore chest. Well sprung ribs and moderate turn of stifle. Nice bone throughout. Clean on the move, another who when excited has a tendency to raise his tail just above the horizontal.
2) J. & E. Murphy’s Esslinbern Maximus – as 2nd in class 5
CLASS: 7 – NOVICE DOG (2, 1)
1) J. & E. Murphy’s Esslinbern Maximusm – as 2nd in class 5
CLASS: 8 – NOT BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG (1)
1) C. Hughes, J. Hughes, D. Hughes & D. Hughes’ WALDERSHELF CUBBY AD ASTRA – not a word you use much with BMD but this was quite a flashy boy, strong masculine head, solid muzzle, broad at the rear of skull, strong neck with good angulation, solid body with nice turn of stifle, cuts quite a nice side profile, being picky he has a longer slope to croup than most. Clean and true on the move at a steady gait.
CLASS: 9 – GRADUATE DOG (0)
CLASS: 10 – POST GRADUATE DOG (1)
1) R. & P. Meakin’s BERNSEGO SABURBAN (IMP RUS) – Good sized male, solid masculine head, muzzle strong and longer than some, lovely dark drown almond shaped eyes, broad skull, strong neck, well laid should and good bone to forelegs, pasterns could be a little stringer, deep chest, well angulated rear and covered the ground well on the move with a reaching gait.
CLASS: 11 – LIMIT DOG (4)
1) O. & M. Copeland’s KERNOW DOLLAR PROMISES AT MAXJABAR – My find of the day, quite an unassuming dog but really does tick all the boxes, beautiful masculine head, broad and strong, dark eyes set aside a well defined stop, strong muscled neck, well laid shoulders, strong well boned straight legs and large round but tight feet, deep chest and strong loin, well angulated rear and nice set to tail, in excellent full bodied coat. Didn’t disappoint on the move, true in all aspects and moved with purpose and dignity.
2) J. Sutton & H. Davenport Willis’ NELSTEPHBERN ME AND MY BOY WITH SHIRDEES – Solid compact male, balanced head, moderate but define stop, dark eye with soft expression. Strong neck which could be longer, good angles front and moderate at rear, legs straight with good bone and short slightly angulated pasterns and lovely round tight feet. Moved true in all aspects.
3) S. Bridges’ KRIMM BERNENSKA SFORA AT KERNOW (IMP POL) – Another nice younger male, broad solid masculine head, well balanced and in proportion, medium length neck, well laid shoulders and super bone on this lad. Another with large round tight feet, good depth of chest reaching well back to short strong loin, slight rise to croup over the loin, would prefer a little more rear angulation which showed with a shorter rear action on the move.
