The club held two Open shows on the first day to start our 3 day week-end off with a flourish. These were imaginatively titled Open Show 1 and Open Show 2.

Our grateful thanks go to Tony Paczowski, a late change of judge, due to illness of our original judge Karen Kennedy. (So the judge is not as stated on the front of the catalogue and in previous postings and pre-publicity).

Many thanks to the Officers & Committee for the kind Invitation to judge this show and for the hospitality on the day.  I was asked to judge the Show at very short notice because the scheduled judge was taken ill and I would like to thank the exhibitors for supporting me on the day with a quality entry.

1^st Watson’s ETTERBERN GOZAN TO STEPDASHAR

Confident, promising youngster with a sound steady movement. His head is well marked with expressive dark eyes & good ear set. He has round feet, good bone and well muscle hindquarters for his age.

1^st Baldwin & Hartley-Mair VALLERIITA BIJOU DE LA SOURCE (Imp Pol)

Very promising with attractive head & body markings. She is compact & well ribbed with a firm back, straight forelegs & round feet. She strides out well with a good tail carriage and keeping her lovely shape particularly in profile. Best Baby Puppy in Show.

A lovely shape with a profuse puppy coat. She is compact with a level back, well sprung ribcage & muscled hindquarters. Moved well.

8-year-old who is compact & sturdy with good bone & substance who stands true on round compact feet. His head is masculine & broad with a flat skull, defined stop, strong muzzle & jaw. He has a broad chest & depth of brisket, well sprung ribcage & a firm level back. He has attractive head & body markings. He moves out with purpose with reach keeping a balanced shape.

 

2^nd Bridges CH. KERNOW TROUBLUE.

A balanced 7-year-old with a broad head with a good width between the eyes, defined stop with a strong muzzle & jaw. He has a muscular neck, level back, round ribcage & well-muscled thighs. He moved soundly but not quite the follow through of the winner.

 

3^rd Copeland’s SZARHEGYALJAI FIFTY-FIFTY AT MAXJABAR (Imp. Hun)

7-year-old with plenty of substance & a profuse coat. He is masculine throughout with a broad head, strong muzzle & jaw. He is well bodied with a round ribcage & good depth of brisket.

10-Month-old who is compact with a balanced outline. His head is masculine with a flat skull, almond shaped dark eye, strong muzzle & scissor bite. He has straight forelegs, with round feet, good length of rib but just needs to develop in chest and ribcage. He moved well with reach & good follow through. BPD

Only 16 months old but there is a lot to like about this youngster. He is a lovely shape & balance with good bone & substance all through. His head has attractive markings and is broad with a flat skull, strong muzzle, high set ears and a dark eye all enhancing his expression. He is well developed in chest and ribcage with a level back and rounded rump. He stands true on straight forelegs & well muscled rear quarters. He carries his tail well on the move keeping his lovely shape.

He is sturdy with good bone, strong neck with good depth of brisket & well ribbed back. His back is level with a rounded rump and well-muscled, nicely angulated rear quarters. His movement is sound & straight up & down showing good reach and follow through in profile.

4-year-old who has a masculine head with a defined stop, strong muzzle & jaw. He is compact with a good width of chest and well sprung ribcage. Would like a little more length of neck to give a more balanced outline. Moved ok.

3^rd Lindsay’s OAKBERN RIPSAW RYE.

2-year-old with good bone & substance. Masculine head with a strong muzzle. He is sturdy with a good depth of brisket & muscular hindquarters but is a little long in back which spoils the balance.

2-year-old with a broad head flat skull and defined stop. He has a lovely dark eye with a strong muzzle & scissor bite. He has bone & substance with a level back, depth of brisket and spring of rib. His forelegs are straight and rear quarters muscular. His movement is sound showing good reach in profile.

Thank you to the Bernese Mountain Club of Great Britain for the invitation to judge at this wonderful Event So much work and passion goes on for this event and you can feel the joy and excitement for the breed around the ring I was very well looked after by everyone and had some lovely food too.

Just a quick foot note on my initial observations on the day. All temperaments were good and majority of the exhibits were happy and enthusiastic. There are some fronts that could be improved either being out at the elbow or short in upper arm and also narrow fronts which obviously effects front movement Some promising youngsters coming through. A variation in type but definitely more consistency in this than other breeds that I’ve judged recently so that is a very positive thing in my opinion.

 

SPECIAL MEMBERS PUPPY AWARDS (3,1 abs)

1.KING’S ARVELLA CAPTIVATING CALLIE (B)

Attractive, feminine head with nice markings Dark eye defined stop and well-set ears. Good bite. She has a well-balanced profile with good leg length in anticipation for when the chest drops moderately sprung rib and good strength to topline. Lovely feet and bone on balance to frame. Correct coat texture She won the class with the added bonus of her inquisitive and confident nature but mostly her movement which was balanced and rhythmic staying clean and true. Beautifully handled.

2.OAKABY’S TICKBERN ONLY ONE CARINA AT ISCABERN (B)

Another really pretty girl who was beautifully marked all over Compact and plenty of strength and bone for age and size Feminine head with dark eye and beautiful expression She was a little unsettled today and played up a bit but she had moments where she was composed and moved well. A really nice youngster.

At just 16 Months there is a lot to like about this boy. Super shape, compact, strong with plenty of bone Handsome head and kind expression with dark eye, good stop and medium well set ears Strong muscular neck Excellent angles and well sprung rib. Firm straight back held well on the move Short strong hocks, balanced angulation Lovely big feet and super coat condition and texture The dog and handler were very in tune with each other especially on the move where he had great reach with power from behind He was true in all directions, retaining a firm level topline Really nice boy.

2.HANDLEY AND WALTONS BERAISY SOMEONE TO LOVE (B)

13 month old female who presented a compact shape. Feminine head with good eye shape and colour. Strong muzzle and broad skull. Firm topline and well-toned all through. Presented in beautiful coat and condition Lovely feet and bone Positive side gait.

 

SPECIAL MEMBERS POST GRADUATE AWARD (5, 1 Abs)

This class had such variation in type and soundness.

1.NEW’S ETTERBERN FOREVER FIRST (D)

Masculine attractive head on this 2 and-a-half-year old male Broad skull and muzzle with good stop Dark eye of good shape and set. Slightly wavy coat in good condition Compact and strong in profile. Well let down hocks I would like a better front as this would greatly improve his movement He covered the ground well with power however he is swimming in front.

2.SPALDING’S KINELARTY NAUGHTY BUT NICE (B)

I really liked this girl but she wasn’t happy today after being snapped at by a dog, this I witnessed. Pretty head and expression good stop Medium neck and good angles Nice compact shape and good coat Well off for bone and a good foundation for when she matures I would have liked to have seen her move to her full potential as this would have given her the class but the handler really didn’t get the best out of her so had to settle for 2^nd.

I can see why this girl is a Champion Very nice in profile and does not disappoint under hand I would at a guess reached maturity and structurally has everything in the right place Feminine, attractive head with lovely markings and expression Good neck and excellent spring of rib. Strong level back and short strong loin. Wider white markings on front but does not detract from her quality. Another exhibit from this kennel showing clean and true movement.

2.SOKEL’S KERNOW BLUE LAGOON (B)

Another beautiful girl that I liked a lot She is of different type to my class winner but I feel she scored well for balance Pretty head dark eye and well set ears. Good bone and substance and coat was in lovely condition. Well let down hocks  She moved with reach and followed through well from behind She was  balanced and I really like the relationship she had with her handler She really bought the best out of her and it was lovely to see that.
