This was the most challenging day of the whole extended week-end with the expected rain arriving and persisting until afternoon. Not that anyone seemed too bothered though, our main Open Show Judge Lois Wilson smiled away through it all and thank you to all exhibitors for their fortitude and acceptance of the measures we took. The rain slackened off during the Members Awards which were mostly held in the ring. Some ‘Dunkirk spirit’ was definitely on display and everyone made the best of it. Despite the deluge I don’t think anyone got soaked whilst showing and the undercover area worked well, we certainly fared much better than the unfortunate Driffield show the previous day.

As with the other days of our long week-end Bernese Party our day opened with a carting parade in the wet conditions. Apologies but due to ‘operator error’, not helped by the last minute power failure just before opening the show and the rain, the photos of this were not of sufficient standard. We would like to thank the carters who made the effort to appear in the rain to mark the start of our first day of events.

There’s a modern motto that goes something like “Life isn’t about avoiding the storms but learning to dance in the rain“
and rain, puddles and mud certainly weren’t bad news for everyone!

There were lots of smiley faces still enjoying their day at a dog show and whilst there wasn’t much actual ringside presence for most of the time there was still a happy vibe as everyone shared the experience and came through unscathed.

Thank you to the club to judge at their Club’s Open Show, pity about the weather, but the rain could not dampen the spirits of all present, and all exhibits had weather proof coats. Special thanks to my stewards Mark Avery & Debbie Buck who kept the paperwork dry!
Baby Puppy Bitch (2:1) 1st Brambles ETTERBERN ONLY WAY IS ESSEX AT SHIRDEES 5mth female. Best Baby Puppy in Show. A super confident youngster, developing well for age, dark eyes, still changing teeth has scissor bite. Balanced angulation, did move with four feet on the ground most of the time, correct colour, very friendly.
Veteran Dog (4:1) 1st Green, Green & Smiths MATTHIAS VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT WALDERSHELF (IMP NLD) 7 ½ yr male. Best of Breed & Best Veteran in Show. An impressive male, top of the size, sturdy and so balanced, not showing his age other than discoloured teeth. Correct head to body proportions. Head – flat skull, good stop, straight muzzle, tidy lips, scissor bite. Dark almond shaped eyes, tight lids. Ears correct. Sufficient length of neck. Well laid shoulder & good return of upper arm. Parallel well boned legs. Level top line, deep chest well sprung ribs, strong loin with correct tail set, moderate hind angulation, well-muscled, moves true going & coming with reach and drive. Correct coat and colouring.
2nd Hughes CH WALDERSHELF CAUSING KAOS 10yr neutered male, enjoying his day out, better proportions and width of chest than 3rd in class. Strong masculine head, flat skull, correct stop, some teeth missing. Dark almond shaped eyes, ears correct set and size. Would like more front angulation and this shows in movement, level topline, croup a little steep. Moderate hind angulation. Excellent coat and correct colour.
3rd Stephenson’s KERNOW SOMETHING PERFECT 8yr male. Another who was enjoying his day out. Correct head proportions, would like a wider chest & more front angulation, good bone, compact body. Moderate hind angulation, correct set, and length of tail. Dense coat of correct colour.
Minor Puppy Dog (1:0) 1st Green, Green, English & English’s DEVAEL MI AMIGO AT WALDERSHELF (IMP ESP) 7mth male. Best Minor Puppy, Res Best Puppy in Show. Pleasing happy puppy, really enjoying his time in the ring, not often keeping all 4 feet on the ground, so not easy to assess movement. Correct head proportions with mischievous expression. Body developing well for age. Dark oval eyes, scissor bite, black nose. Good balanced angulation front & hind. Strong bone and show lots of promise. Double coat with correct colours.
Junior Dog (2:1) 1st Lindsay’s OAKBERN RIPSAW RYE 15mth male. Pleasing youngster developing well. Head proportions correct, would like eyelids a little tighter. Scissor bite, tight lips. Ears set high, carried correctly. Correct length of neck. Deep chest, balanced front & hind angulation. Topline needs more strength, well ribbed back. Correct tail set and length. Moves true going & coming. Correct double coat and colouring.
Novice Dog (2:1) 1st Jefferson’s ELBRUSBERN AMADEAUS 19mth male. Another dog enjoying his day out. Skull a little rounded, moderate stop, dark oval eyes. Scissor bite, black nose. Would like more front angulation and this shows in movement. Chest just reaches to elbow, would like more strength of topline, moderate hind angulation, correct set, and length of tail, carried up on the move. Has good double coat with correct colouring. Friendly and happy.

Graduate Dog (2:1) 1st Handley’s BERAISY APACHE TEAR OF ENCHAMBRAY 3 yr neutered male. Correct head proportions, good stop, dark oval eye, shoulder long and sloping, upper arm shorter. Elbows not tight, stands east/west. Dip in topline standing and when moving. Would like more hind angulation, tail carried correctly. Front movement not good due to structure. Double Coat of correct texture, super dark tan colouring.
Post Graduate Dog (1:0) 1st New’s ETTERBERN FOREVER FIRST 19mth male. Correct proportions to head, compact body. Flat skull, slight furrow, good stop, dark brown eyes, ears medium size, held close to head. Muscular neck, deep chest would like more front angulation, and this shows in movement. Level topline, bushy tail, reaching hock joint. Hind movement close, throws front as looking up at handler. Excellent double coat of correct colouring. Friendly.
Limit Dog (2:1) 1st Bridges KRIMM BERNENSKA SFORA AT KERNOW (IMP POL) 18mth male. Heavy and stocky in appearance. Carrying weight. Head quite heavy, skull slightly rounded, deep stop. Scissor bite, muzzle quite short, thick lips. Strong bone. Balanced, moderate front & hind angulation. Has a dip behind withers, low set bushy tail. Moves true coming and going, needs more reach and drive. In full coat of correct texture, happy dog.
Open Dog (4:1) 1st King, Green & Dedman’s PARWIZZ VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT ARVELLA (IMP NLD) 6 ¾ yr old male Res BOB, Res Male Head in proportion to body. Masculine head, flat skull, correct stop, level muzzle, scissor bite, dark oval shaped eyes, high set ears carried close to head. Correct length of neck well-muscled. Broad deep chest, well boned, tight elbows. Balanced moderate, front & hind angulation. Level topline, good muscle tone, bushy tail carried up on the move, not curled over back. Moves true. Coat of correct texture & colouring correct.
2nd Hughes CH WALDERSHELF CUBBY AD ASTRA 4yr male. Masculine dog with strong head, almond shaped dark eyes, level muzzle, correct scissor bite, wide nostrils, highest ears carried close to head. Neck could be a little longer, strong bone, deep broad chest. Balanced front & hind angulation. Level topline, low set bushy tail. Moves well coming & going, not as much reach & drive as 1st in class. In excellent coat of correct texture & colours correct.
3rd Manix’s WALDERSHELF FAME ‘N FORTUNE 4 ½ yr male. Strong masculine dog. Head heavier than others in class. Flat broad skull. Good stop, dark eyes, scissor bite, level muzzle with wide open black nostrils, jowls could be firmer. Moderate length of neck, broad, deep chest, strong bone, would like a little more length of leg. Level topline, low set tail, moved true coming and going needs more reach & drive. Well groomed, double coat with correct colouring.
Veteran Bitch (7:1) A loverly class of Bernese 1st Marsden & Robertson TICKBERN VALENCIA AVEC VELLBERN 7yr female. Res Best Female Feminine, balanced, with correct head to body proportions. Flat skull, with thin white blaze. Straight muzzle, tidy lips, scissor bite, dark almond shaped eyes, correct ears. Compact rather than long body, deep, broad chest. Level topline, moderate angulation, moves true coming & going with reach, double coat of correct texture, good colouring.
2nd Sherwood’s JESTERBROCK LOVESTRUCK 7 yr female. Correct head to body proportions. Skull a little rounded. Good stop, eyes dark oval shape with white showing. Strong level muzzle, tight lips, scissor bite. Good length of neck, broad deep chest, which looks deeper due to excellent length to coat. Has more hind than front angulation. Moves true, excellent coat and correct colouring.
3rd Green, Green & English’s BERNERDALENS QUEST FOR FAME AT WALDERSHELF (IMP SWE) 8yr female. Wel- proportioned female, correct head, dark almond shaped eyes, level muzzle, large nostrils. Deep chest, balanced angulation. Moved true coming & going, not happy moving around the ring, breathing heavily. Slight wave to double coat, good colouring.
Puppy Bitch (1:0) 1st Wood’s OSKEVABERN HELLRAISER 10th female Best Puppy in Show. Pleasing feminine girl with happy expression. Developing well for age. Flat skull, dark eyes, scissor bite, would like more front angulation, level topline, good depth and width of chest for age, correct tail set, moves a little loose, but still young. Good coat and correct colouring.
Junior Bitch (4:0) 1st Price’s NOBLEBERN GRACE 15mth female. Best head & eyes in class. Rounded skull, good stop, level muzzle, scissor bite. Medium length of neck, balanced moderate front & hind angulation. Good depth of chest. Nice bone, with slight slope to pasterns. Topline could be firmer. Correct tail set. Moves close coming & going. Slight wave to coat, correct colouring.
2nd Worral’s OAKBERN KODIAC GOLD 16mth female A strong head, eyes, round in shape, scissor bite, dark pigmentation. A little throaty, deep chest, topline needs more strength to loin, good bone. Moderate front & hind angulation. Moves true coming & going. Double coat coming on well, correct colouring.
3rd Love’s GORSEBERN ATOMIC 15mth female. Good head to body proportions, would like more bone and needs more weight. Correct almond shape dark eyes, strong muzzle scissor bite. Chest still needs to drop, & pasterns need more strength. Moderate angulation. Level topline, correct set of tail, slight wave to coat. Toes in a little, has reach and drive. Correct colouring.

Members Award Judges Report

First I would like to say thank you to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge Members Awards at this show. Thanks to Karen my steward who kept everything running smoothly. The biggest thanks goes to everyone who brought their beautiful dogs for me to judge, it was a very great pleasure and although the weather was not kind to us nobody had any issue with being judged in the rain. All my entrants had fantastic temperaments which is a credit to our breed and despite the weather all dogs were well presented.
CLASS A – SPECIAL MEMBERS’ PUPPY AWARDS (2)
Two puppies who are very different and at different stages of development but both show good promise.
1st Green, Green, English & English’s Devael Mi Amigo at Waldershelf (Imp ESP)
Substantial well marked almost 8 month old dog with a strong head that is developing well, dark almond shaped eyes, strong broad muzzle and correct ear shape and set. Strong neck, good shoulders and well developed forechest for age. Large broad frame, good spring of rib and level topline. He thoroughly enjoyed his time in the ring and showed correct movement once settled. Despite still developing I was impressed by his breed type and substance which ultimately won him the class.
2nd Wood’s Oskevabern Hellraiser
Pretty 10 month old medium sized bitch with a pleasing outline. Very feminine head with flat skull, dark eyes and correct bite. Very balanced for age with good proportions, enough bone for size, compact loin with level topline both standing and on the move with good tail set and carried correctly. Moved with ease around the ring shown in lovely condition.

A strong yet feminine, almost 14 month old bitch with excellent breed type and substance for age. Presenting a good outline and proportions with plenty of body and good depth of chest. Lovely developing head with flat skull, dark almond eyes and correct scissor bite. Classic colouration, good angles front & rear with a level top line that held when moving. One to watch out for in the future.
2nd Worrall’s Oakbern Kodiac Gold.
Almost 16 month old bitch of balanced proportions with correct 9:10 ratio, level topline and rounded rump. Strong straight front legs, tight compact feet and good bone. Body developing well, enough forechest for age but head still needing to mature. Moved well with good reach and drive. Very well handled and presented.

15 month old dog just going through the junior stage. Litter brother to 2nd place and sharing similar qualities. Strong, masculine classically marked head with well-developed stop, leading to strong neck & shoulders. Thoroughly enjoyed himself but took a while to settle in the ring therefore not showing off his full potential on the move. Shown in good condition.

1st New’s Etterbern Forever First
Attractive, 19 month old male, developing well. Excellent head of good proportions with dark almond shaped eyes, well defined stop and flat skull. Correct dentition. 9:10 proportions presenting a classic outline, with rounded rump and level top line standing and on the move. Good bone. Excelled in profile movement, to be critical, he could be a little cleaner coming towards but this did not detract from his overall quality and breed type that ultimately won him the class. Very well presented with good classic colouration.
2nd Bridges’ Kernow Florin
Shapely 2.5 years old female with excellent breed type. Medium sized with strong, compact proportions. Feminine head with good expression, dark almond shaped eyes and correct scissor bite. Deep, broad chest, good spring of rib and firm back. Correct tail set and carried well when moving. Good movement and foot placements. Shown in good condition.
3rd Watson’s Stepdashar Magical Wish
A very pretty 2.4 year old bitch with attractive head with classic colouration, correct bite, well defined stop and eyes of correct shape and colour. Enough bone for size and well-developed chest, good topline but I would prefer a little more length of leg. Initially unsettled on moving but her handler was able to calm her to then allow her to show at her best. Fantastic temperament and shown great condition.

1st Green, Green & English’s Matthias Vom Durrbachler Wald At Waldershelf (Imp NLD)
7.5 year old male, shown in excellent condition, not showing his age at all – a real showman. Masculine head with flat skull, well defined stop, strong straight muzzle & correct bite. Dark almond shaped eyes; Medium sized ears set well, good correct length of neck. Good angulations both front & rear. Well boned dog with level topline, good spring of ribs & correct tail set. Moved well around the ring with drive and purpose reaching out well in front.
2nd Bridges’ Krimm Bernenska Sfora At Kernow(Imp POL)
Typey 2.7 years male that is well developed for his younger age but not done yet. Masculine head, flat skull with the darkest almond eyes and good expression. Broad chest with good forechest, strong, well boned legs with round compact feet. Correct 9:10 proportions, good spring of rib and well developed body. Easy, steady mover covering the ground well in all directions but just preferred the presence of 1st today.
3rd Green, Green & English’s Waldershelf Gin And Tonic
3.3 years beautiful bitch with strong yet feminine head flat skull & well defined stop, very well constructed and sound bitch of correct proportions with a pleasing outline. Covered the ring with ease displaying good reach and drive on the move with excellent foot placement. Shown in excellent coat and condition. She held her own in this class but just preferred the heads of the 2 males ahead of her today.
