After the ‘interesting’ weather for the Open Show 2 days earlier, this was the second of two perfect dog show days with some sunshine, but never too much, some cloudy spells and a gentle breeze pretty much all day. Show Judge, Breed Specialist Di Atherton, had drawn an entry of almost a hundred dogs and there were a further 12 entries for Karen Hayward in the classes of the Limited Obedience Show.

Judge’s Critique by Di Atherton

Firstly I would like to apologise for the delay in my critique. As some of you know I have had eye surgery recently and I struggle to use the computer for any length of time so it has taken me a while, so sorry.

I was honoured to be asked to judge Bernese at The BMD Club of Great Britain, originally for 2020 so it’s been a long wait! I would like to thank the committee for the invitation and for looking after me and Mike for the day. The last time I judged was at Crufts in 2022 and some of comments then are still relevant today. We still seem to have a few dogs without the correct proportions appearing too long in body and short on the leg. A lot of dogs overreach on the move and a fair few are close behind. Temperaments have improved with only a couple of youngsters a bit unsure. All stood for examination. Saying that, I was spoilt for choice for my main winners, a number of bitches especially being of the quality I was looking for. The atmosphere at the show was good with lots of applause for all placed dogs. Lovely, large venue with lots of space and the sun was shining. Thank you to everyone who entered, I really enjoyed my day.

Baby Puppy Dog: (2,0)

1st        Baldwin’s FORTONPARK TOP TONES   Very shapely puppy of just 4 months. Lovely head shape with correct dark eyes. Massive big coat on his cobby body with decent bone. Really enjoying his day out. Moved with style. Best Baby Puppy.

2nd       Cotton’s ETTERBERN BAZ VEGAS AT JUKESBERN  Another lovely baby, 5 months and better schooled than 1st! Taller stamp of a dog with correct angulations. Good head shape with kind expression. Slightly bum high at the minute and a bit looser at front coming towards but lots to like.

Baby Puppy Bitch: (2,0)

1st        Brambles ETTERBERN ONLY WAY IS ESSEX  2 similar shaped puppies, being litter mates. Good construction and bone for size. Feminine head with nice expression. Slightly bum high.  Very happy girl, enjoying herself. Bit loose on the move.

2nd       Evans ETTERBERN MADE IN ESSEX   Same shape as her sister but not as confident. Stood for her exam but was unsure of herself, which also showed on the move. Lovely kind expression with a dark eye.

Minor Puppy Dog: (4, 1 Abs)

1st        Reid and Givens FORTONPARK SENATOR This young male gave me the more balanced outline of the 3 present.  Correct proportions height to length with decent bone. Good head shape with lovely expression. Dark eyes and correct ear shape and set. Moves out soundly in all directions. Presentation and handling were excellent. Best Puppy in Show.

2nd       Edge’s MALINDIBEACH HARLEQUIN.   Larger type of male with good bone. Strong, masculine head developing well with dark eyes and good expression. Good angulations and level topline on the stance but he loses it a bit on the move. Hopefully this will strengthen with age.

3rd       Tomkins FORTONPARK MORE CLASS FOR BERNERSHAW .  Good shape and size again with bone to match. Decent head shape and expression. Another who needs to tighten on the move but to be expected at this young age. Temperaments excellent on all 3.

Puppy Dog: (4,0)

1st        Griffiths and Orme JAYBIEM WHO FRAMED ROGER. Shapely boy of a good size with decent bone for size. Correct head developing well with dark eyes and nice expression. Stands with a level topline that he holds on the move. Lovely strong drive at rear but loose at the front coming towards but will expect this to tighten as he matures. Very smart profile movement.

2nd       Titchmarsh BERNERVALLEY UPSTART CROW.  Larger, rangier type than 1st who will take a bit of time to come together. Stronger head than 1st with dark, correct eyes. Slightly upright in shoulder. Again a bit loose in movement coming towards. Lovely temperament and handled well.

Junior Dog: (5,1)

1st        Wort’s MEADOWPARK WHAT A DREAM AT GLORYBERN.  Excellent body shape with correct angulations front and rear. Masculine head with calm expression. Good reach of neck leading into level topline. Sound on the move in all directions. Sadly today lacking coat but he has nothing to hide.

2nd       Lambert’s MONALOU BATCHELOR BOY.  Top sized male with excellent bone, no doubting his sex. Strong, masculine head, darkly marked. Correctly angled front and rear but a touch long in loin. Holds his level topline on the move. Profile movement excellent but another loose at the front. Excellent presentation.

3rd         Mallett’s CODEBERN I’M YOUR MAN.  Rangier type again who just needs time to mature. Masculine head of correct shape. Decent bone for size. Would prefer more bend of stifle. Moves out well in all directions. Excellent temperament.

RES      Lindsay’s OAKBERN RIPSAW RYE

Yearling Dog: (4,1)

1st        Austen’s NORBURYLOU KARIAS STAR. Lovely masculine head on this good sized male with dark eyes and kind expression.  Good proportions and level topline. Not in full coat but presented well. Moves easily, especially good in profile. Handled well by his owner who needs to be more confident in her ability! He went really well. Just needs time to mature

2nd       New’s ETTERBERN FOREVER FIRST. Similar shape to 1st with good angulation and decent bone. Slightly narrow all through which showed in his movement being rather close. Very nice in profile though.

3rd        Jefferson’s ELBRUSBERN AMADEUS. Another who just needs time to come together. Biggest boy in the class of a rangier type. Totally out of coat which just highlighted his immaturity. Nice masculine head and good angulations. Slightly long in loin but level topline. Handled well.

Novice Dog: (2,0)

1st         Stelmach and Davis CHIPPIS DIAMOND DAZZLE.  Top sized male with lovely masculine head. Correct eye shape and ear set. Level topline and decent bone. Upright in shoulder placement and this shows on the move where he over-reaches when viewed from the side. Lovely temperament and handled well.

2nd        Stelmach and Davis CHIPPIS DIAMOND DUDE Rangier in shape than his brother and head not quite as good being longer in his muzzle. Kind, dark eyes and good expression. Sound in profile movement but close at the rear. Again, nice temperament.

Post Graduate Dog: (1,1)

Mid Limit Dog: (3,1)

Two very different types, both with lots to like.

1st         Baldwin’s FORTOPNPARK TONYONE.  Upper medium sized, correctly constructed male with bone good for size. Good proportions height to length with a level topline. Masculine head with dark eyes and good expression. Used his ears well. So sound on the move. Presentation and handling excellent. I’m sure his day will come just not quite as mature as the main winners.

2nd        Bridges KRIMM BERNENSKA SFORA AT KERNOW (IMP POL).  Lovely type of dog with excellent bone. Strong, masculine head with dark eye and calm expression. Stands a bit bum high but his topline levels out on the move. His proportions are excellent but he carries a massive coat and it makes him look stuffy in neck and too short on the leg. He does over-reach on the move too when viewed from the side but coming and going looks impressive. Handled well.

Limit Dog: (3,1)

2 nice males here showing slightly different types but both with lots to like. Difficult decision!

1st        Copeland’s KERNOW DOLLAR PROMISES AT MAXJABAR. Good size male just coming into his best. Decent head shape with dark eyes giving a kind expression. Good reach of neck leading into correct shoulders,  dead level topline and balanced angulation at the rear. Touch long in loin and would prefer more width through his body but as he matures fully this may change. Excellent on the move, especially impressive in profile. Excellent presentation and handled well.

2nd       Gurney’s MONALOU WHAT HO JEEVES. Overall he appears more masculine with a stronger head shape and more bone. Darkly marked with excellent expression, preferred his head to 1st. Decent construction but as a large 2yr old he has more maturing to do, will be interested to see how he comes on. Another one who impressed on the move, really good in profile. Excellent presentation and handling from this exhibitor as usual.

Open Dog: (1)

1st        Cotton’s CH KERNOW BILLY NO MATES AT JUKESBERN. Mature 6 year old boy who gives a lovely shape on the stand. He is a good size with excellent bone to match. Strong head shape with good expression. Good angulation both front and rear but another who is a touch long in the loin. Handled well to show off his powerful movement, excellent temperament and presentation.

Champion Dog: (5,1)

1st        Cotton’s CH SHIRDEES GREATEST SHOWMAN AT JUKESBERN. I have judged this male before and liked him then but he really pulled it out of the bag today! Top sized with bone to match, standing he shows off his correct construction. Lovely masculine head with dark, expressive eyes. Ears are correct and carried well. Excellent reach of neck leading into level topline and correct croup. Good depth of chest and correct loin. Presented in excellent, hard condition, correct markings and jet black profuse coat. He was really on his toes and made his handler work hard but could not be denied today, powered around the ring, especially good in profile. Excellent temperament which shone through. Well deserved Dog CC. Never seen him look better!

2nd       Manix’ CH WALDERSHELF FAME ‘N FORTUNE. Another male I have admired for a while. Smaller than 1st but all in proportion. Excellent shape with good bone for size. Excellent head shape with gorgeous dark eyes giving kind expression. Shows himself off well being alert and attentive to his handler. Handled well to show his sound movement from all angles. Presentation was excellent. Close decision today RCC

3rd        Bridges’ CH KERNOW TROUBLUE Mature 6 year old of excellent breed type. Masculine head with flat skull and pronounced stop. Lovely calm expression. Massive coat which makes him look short on the leg but his proportions are correct. Carrying a bit too much weight for me but he was happy to move, showing his sound, balanced movement. Lovely temperament.

Res       Hughes’ CH WALDERSHELF CUBBY AD ASTRA

Veteran Dog: (4,2)

1st        Green, Green and English’ MATTHIAS VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT WALDERSHELF (IMP NDL). 7 years old. Lovely overall shape on this upper sized male. Masculine head with a kind expression. Good ear shape and used well. Good length of neck and level topline. Correct angulations front and rear. Lacking coat today but presented and handled well to show his balanced movement. Best Veteran Dog and later Best Veteran in Show

2nd       Hughes’ CH WALDERSHELF CAUSING KAOS ShCM 10 year old male. Good sized male with bone to match. Masculine head with decent width between ears, dark eyes and calm expression. Slightly long in muzzle. Short in neck but level topline and balanced construction. Very happy to move around the ring, really good for his age. Excellent presentation and handling.

Good Citizen dog scheme Dog : (4,1)

1st        Austin’s KERNOW BLUE MIST. 4 year old male on the smaller side but well constructed. Head could be a bit stronger but good expression and he engages well to show his correct ear placement. Handled well to show his sound, powerful movement. Presentation and temperament were excellent.

Bitch Classes

Minor Puppy Bitch: (1)

1st        Small’s MALINDIBEACH CARTIER.  Sweet puppy who was a bit unsure but stood for her exam. Good construction with correct proportions. Feminine head with dark eyes and correct ears. She was sound on the move from all angles. Handled sympathetically to get the best out of her. Best Puppy Bitch.

Puppy Bitch: (3,0)

3 similar puppies with lots to like. All need to improve in head but that is expected at this age.

1st        Vaughan’s KERNOW PENQUIN.  This puppy was more correct in body shape today. Correct angulations and level topline. Good bone for size. Moved out well in this class but was unsettled later in the puppy challenge. Presentation excellent.

2nd       Wood’s OSKEVABERN HELLRAISER.  Good construction on this girl with better bone than 1st but lacking body at the minute. Also out of coat but what she had was presented well. Feminine head with dark eyes and a gorgeous expression. Sound from all angles. Handled well.

3rd        Clough’s BERNARK BROWN EYED GIRL.  Another nice puppy but not co-operating with handler, she seemed a bit worried. Good angulations with a level topline. Would prefer more bone. She was happier on the move where she covered the ground well.

Junior Bitch: (5)

This was a tough class, another with lots to like. It will be interesting to see how these girls mature.

1st        Bridges’ OONELLADREAM A STOLEN KISS AT KERNOW. 14 months old. Substantial but feminine bitch. Dark faced and kind expression coming from her dark eyes. Presented a good outline with decent bone for size. Sound in all directions with excellent temperament. Looking forward to see how she matures.

2nd       Price’s NOBLEBERN GRACE. Nearly 16 months and maturing nicely. Good overall proportions, correct angulations with a dead level topline. Sound in movement and calm in temperament.

3rd         Gurney’s MONALOU DEVIL WOMAN. Gorgeous head and expression on this young girl. Medium sized with bone to match. Correct angulations front and rear. Moved soundly in all directions to show her happy temperament. Lacking coat today.

Yearling Bitch: (6)

1st        Baldwin’s CH FORTONPARK VALENTALLINA. It is no secret that I love this classy girl from her beautiful, feminine head to her joyfully wagging tail.  Her expression is gorgeous and she really engages with you to show off her correct eyes and ear carriage. She is the correct size and shape, excellent proportions and angulations. She has matured into a strong girl with excellent bone and tight feet. She powers around the ring with style and drive demonstrating effortless movement, being sound from every angle and in firm, well muscled condition. Fantastic, happy temperament was a joy to see. Topped off with an immaculate full coat and handled to perfection I couldn’t deny her Bitch CC and ultimately Best in Show.

2nd       Price’s NOBLEBERN GRACE

3rd        Krjukova’s ELBRUSBERN BOLD LEGACY. Lovely shape to this young girl but she was a bit worried about the whole thing. Stood for her examination and was happy on the move to show me her sound movement. Good, feminine head with correct eye shape. Out of coat but what she had was well presented. Once she gets used to the show ring she should do well.

Res       Wright and Kirk’s HIGH OAKS STILL WATER RUN DEEP TO ROESILBERN (IMP ITA)

1st         Spalding’s KINELARTY NAUGHTY BUT NICE. Nearly 2 year old who appears more mature in head and body than 2nd. Good, feminine head with kind, dark eyes. Good angulation but a touch long in loin. Happy girl, enjoying her day. More settled on the move than 2nd.

2nd        McGrady-Ciesluk’s GORSEBERN INDIAN SUMMER. Taller girl than 1st with good body proportions. Gorgeous dark eyes and expressive when she uses her ears. Would prefer more bend of stifle. Good profile movement.

Post Graduate Bitch: (5,2)

1st             Bridges’ KERNOW FLORIN. Very cobby bitch in full coat, loved her overall shape and size. Excellent bone and construction. She does have a level topline but the coat over her rump makes her look dippy. Gorgeous head shape with dark expressive eyes. Excellent temperament. Handled well to show her powerful sound movement. Definitely one to watch.

2nd            Rossall’s STORMBERNE GO CLASSICAL. Taller than 1st but still good shape overall. Decent bone for size. Longer in muzzle but still feminine head shape. Presented well but out of coat today. Sound coming and going but just overreaches in profile. Happy temperament.

3rd         Mallett’s RODIVECO SIEMPRE REGINA. Darker faced girl with dark eyes and lovely expression. Decent outline when standing and good bone for size. Moved out soundly but didn’t exhibit the drive of the 2 in front of her. Still lots to like.

Mid Limit Bitch: (5,2)

1st         Woods’ ETTERBERN FASHION TRENDS. Mature bitch headed this nice class. She is a good size and shape with a feminine head. I would prefer a slightly shorter muzzle but she has a lovely expression. Good bone for size with excellent presentation. Handled well to show her sound movement being especially good at the rear.

2nd        Small’s MALINDIBEACH ARMANI ROSE. Preferred this girls head to 1st being so feminine with dark eyes and well shaped ears that she used well to show her expression. Good body proportions and maturing well. Excellent presentation. Sound in profile just a touch close at the rear.

3rd         Andrews’ WALDERSHELF LEADING LADY. Different type of bitch to the 2 above her but maturing well. Strong feminine head with dark eye and good expression. Slightly long in loin but with level topline. Sound on the move coming and going but overreaches in profile. Handled well.

Limit Bitch: (7,3)

1st        Worrall’s FORTONPARK SWEET DREAMS AT OAKBERN All lovely girls in this class, all coming into their own now. 1st showed her correct shape off well. Strong feminine head with dark eyes and kind expression. Balanced angulation with level topline. Good bone. Excellent presentation. Handled well to show off her sound, powerful movement. Excellent temperament. Was in close contention for top awards today. I’m sure her time will come.

2nd       Jones’  TREMYWYDDFA BLACK LACE. Close decision! Again nice head shape, bit shorter in muzzle than 1st but correct eyes and ears. Correct construction front and rear but touch short in neck. Good bone for size. Stands four square on neat feet. Sound when viewed from all directions. Excellent presentation and calmly handled.

3rd         Sokel’s KERNOW BLUE LAGOON. Good overall shape with decent bone for size. Nice head shape but it could be a bit wider all through. Level topline and good tail carriage. Moved soundly.

Open Bitch: (5) Really splitting hairs in this class, all were quality bitches.

1st        Green, Green and English’s WALDERSHELF GIN AND TONIC. Surprised this girl doesn’t have her title yet. She has a gorgeous body shape having the correct angulations and proportions expected in the breed. She has a feminine head, muzzle could maybe be a touch shorter but I’m being picky! Lovely expression and she uses her ears well. Presentation was excellent and was quietly handled to show her sound, powerful movement. Really liked her. RCC and Reserve Best in Show.

2nd        Krjukova’s EST CH KAIMON GERHEIL LIZZY (IMP EST). Another with correct body shape, size and proportions. Lovely dark eye and feminine expression. Strong bone and good feet. Happy temperament and she showed well. Sound coming and going but just overreached in profile.

3rd         Sutton and Davenport-Willis’ CH NELSTEPHBERN DIOR BY DESIGN. Mature bitch who presents a lovely shape on the stand having good bone and excellent proportions. Another one who overreached on the go round. Presentation was excellent, as always and handled well.

Champion Bitch: (5,2) 3 Lovely girls, all slightly different in type.

1st        Baldwin’s CH FORTONPARK LOOK WHOS TALKIN. 4 year old strong, mature bitch with really good bone. She is darkly marked on her face but still has a lovely expression. Excellent construction front and rear, another with excellent toned condition. She was the soundest moving in this class striding out with powerful drive. Presentation excellent. She was slightly unsettled in the challenge with a different handler looking for her owner.

2nd       Griffiths and Orme’s CH JAYBIEM IRIS I WAS WITH UTWO. Top sized bitch but still feminine. Gorgeous dark eyes and kind expression. Correctly angulated front and rear, level topline but slightly long in loin. Presentation of a full coat was excellent and handled well. Touch close at the rear going away but moves out with enthusiasm and drive.

3rd        Wilson’s CH MONALOU VOULEZ VOUS AT BLUMENTAL. This girl has the most gorgeous head, lovely dark eyes and melting expression. She presents a lovely shape on the stand although was lacking coat today. She appeared a bit worried but stood her ground to be handled.

Veteran Bitch: (8,3)

1st        Sherwood’s JESTERBROCK LOVESTRUCK. Lovely outline on this 7 year old bitch who was really enjoying her day out. Feminine head and engaging expression. Correct construction with a level topline. Good bone for size. Moved soundly from all directions. Best Veteran Bitch just unlucky to meet the male in top form in the Veteran Challenge. Really liked her!

2nd       Green, Green and English’s BERNERDALENS QUEST FOR FAME AT WALDERSHELF (IMP SWE). Smaller type than 1st but still within Standard. Correct proportions height to length and good angulations.  Sound coming towards but would just prefer a bit more drive from the rear. Another enjoying her day out.

3rd         Baldwin’s TJOFSELINAS I VANA TALLIN (IMP SWE). Shapely mature bitch shown extremely well by her young handler. Very pretty head with dark eyes and kind expression. Medium sized with bone to match. Correct angulations and level topline. Excellent temperament. Touch close at the rear but lovely in profile.

1st        Riseborough’s MALINDIBEACH SERENADE AT MOONBACH. Very nice shapely bitch of 5 years. Feminine head with dark eye. Would prefer slightly shorter muzzle. Could use her ears to better advantage. Good reach of neck into level topline. Good angulations front and rear. Very attentive to her handler. Excellent presentation. Steady, sound mover.

OBEDIENCE AND WORKING

The Limited Obedience Show judge is asked to nominate her Best Obedience Bernese of the day who is awarded the club’s most glamorous solid silver trophy to retain for one year. Judge Karen Hayward’s winner this year, retaining the trophy from last year was Sue Small with her home bred Malindibeach Armani Rose, (Armani).

 

Top Working Dog of the Year

Even with the change of our event scheduling, this Obedience Show is still the last Working competition at our club events for the year. After this has concluded the points are calculated from all working events for the year, Working Carts, Obedience and Agility at the Garden Parties being added to today’s result to produce a ‘Top Four’  and a winner of our Grand Prix Trophy for our Top Working Dog of the year. By holding the presentation just before Best In Show this also allows our bitch CC winner a few minutes to ‘recharge’ whilst the presentations are held and ensures an attentive audience.

This year’s Top 4 Working Bernese were

1st – My Mia with Belle Owen 27 points

2nd – Arthur/Arvella Adorable Arthur at Oldberne with Richard Hallam 24 points

3rd – Elsa/Bernark’s Deja Vu with Yvonne Clough 14 points

4th – Tilly/Chippis Diamond Diva with Geoff Davies 12 points

All four were invited into the main ring to collect their award cards which we thank Belle for sponsoring but, unfortunately, Yvonne had left for home when the presentations were made.

 

 

Big congratulations to Mia and Belle who were presented, by club President Steve Green, with the club’s Grand Prix Trophy which they were also retaining after being the winners in 2023. All four were invited into the main ring to collect their award cards which we thank Belle for sponsoring.

Winner of Pre Beginner and Beginner.
Enthusiastic handler who gave plenty of encouragement and reassurance to Mia whilst working. A pleasure to watch.

Sue Small with Armani
Winner of Novice and also winner of the Overall Cup.
Excellent round of close heel work. Commands to the dog were given in plenty of time for the dog to follow with lots of encouragement from the handler. Both seemed to enjoy the day. Lovely partnership between handler and dog.

Novice second Yvonne Clough’s Bernarks Déjà Vu (Elsa) Clear retrieve. Worked better off lead.
Novice third Belle Owen’s My Mia (Mia). Clear recall. Very close heel work on the straight.
Novice, Geoff Stelmach & Carol Davis’ Chippis Diamond Diva (Tilly) Heel work better off lead some lovely stretches of close heel work.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for asking me to judge the Obedience at the garden party and limited Show. I would also like to thank Debbie my steward who did a brilliant job for me. There were some lovely dogs to judge and lovely friendly handlers too. I was pleased to help some with their issues that they were having, but I think on the day a few just enjoyed sitting and admiring the view.

Thank you for the excellent refreshments (the sausages were amazing) and the cakes too. The cake table was Mum’s (Judy Harris) first stop of the day and now has gained the title of the cake lady.

Many thanks for the beautiful plate with my name and the date of the Show on it. It is a lovely keepsake and I’m very proud of it. The Bernese is very close to my heart as it is the breed that first introduced me into showing.

Good luck and continue to put on a brilliant show in the future.
