Obedience Judge’s Report

Judges comments

A big thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge and enjoy the evenings events on your Golden anniversary. Also a big thank you to Anese, my ring steward for the day, who did a marvellous job of keeping things flowing. I must comment that I never cease to be amazed at how this lovely breed, and their handlers, always rise to the occasion.

INTRODUCTORY

First place Mrs Byrne with Charles – lovely interaction in play section which carried over into the heel on lead. Mum giving lots of vocal encouragement and Charles staying nicely beside her. They are going to do well in future.

Second place Mr Hallam with Arthur – again lovely interaction in play which showed in heelwork with Arthur showing a happy demeanour and glad to be with Dad. Lovely to witness.

Third place Mrs Byrne with Ettie – I think this was not one of Ettie’s favourite past times, but gallantly made the effort to please Mum. Well done

Fourth place Miss Handley with Riley –  this was the first time Riley had ever done this, since being rescued in December after an awful start in life. All credit to Mum for doing so well with Riley. My pleasure to have met you both.

PRE-BEGINNERS

First place Mrs Byrne with Charles – as in introductory, lots of encouragement from Mum. Nice on lead walk, but lost a bit of focus off lead. Considering Charles had never done obedience before today he did well in both classes.

Second place Mrs Marshall with Merlin – very close to being first, worked much better off lead and did a lovely recall. One to watch for the future.

Third place Mrs Bowen with Mia – lovely enthusiasm from Mum which kept Mia in good position on lead, it didn’t quite work so well off lead, but a nice recall. Good effort

Fourth place Miss Edwardson and Raffi – nice heelwork on lead, but off lead Raffi found something more interesting outside the ring. However did a very nice recall, well done.

BEGINNERS

First place Mrs Round with Indie – another due working with enthusiasm and encouragement. Good consistency and sharp turns. Neat recall but decided not to retrieve, will go far once you do. Well done.

Second place Miss Edwardson with Raffi – started off encouragingly but I think Raffi decided it was too hot, by then, and would rather be somewhere cool. However roused himself to impressively fetch the dumbbell.

Third place Mrs Bowen with Mia – a repetition of her pre-beginner round with lots of encouragement from Mum. Lovely recall but no retrieve. Good effort.

NOVICE

First place Mrs Hallam with Fiz– lovely encouragement all around the ring with nice heelwork on lead which got better off lead.  Lovely recall and retrieve. A very nice round, well done.=

Second place Mrs Davis with Tilly – working well together on lead, with few minor faults off lead. Tilly had a little scratch in recall but made up for it coming back quickly. A nice finish in the retrieve.

Third place Mrs Small with Boodles – close contenders for second place with consistent heelwork, on and off lead, with best recall of the day. Good luck next time out.

Fourth place Mrs Owen with Belle – as in previous 2 rounds lots of encouragement from Mum made for consistent on lead work, but Belle lost a bit of interest during off lead and recall. A good effort considering worked 3 rounds, well done.

Fifth place Mrs Small with Armani – good confident heelwork on and off lead, with some nice turns. Good recall and retrieve. Well done.

Obedience Judge – Dave Pierson

SOME OF THE ADVANCE INFORMATION GIVEN ABOUT THIS SHOW – LEFT IN PLACE PURELY FOR INTEREST

2022 Championship Show (Friday)

Judged by Jens (Bitches) and Lisbet (Dogs) Ramsing (Sennettas kennel, Denmark)

Referee: Satu Yla Mononen (Ricarron kennel, Finland)

121 dogs making 132 entries

Here is some background about Lisbet & Jens  Ramsing

The name “Sennettas” is world famous in Bernese circles and is the kennel name of husband and wife team, Jens and Lisbet Ramsing from Denmark.

Jens started out in the early 1970s with the kennel name of “Danettas. He purchased a number of quality females from the famous Swiss kennel, ” Bernetta” owned by Alice Moser (who became his mentor) and together with his then wife Jytte, they enjoyed considerable success at club specialty shows and World shows with a number of Bernese including, World Winner, Heika v Bernetta (b. 1974), World Winner in Bern and Best In Show, Madi v Bernetta (b. 1976). Their first “Danettas” litter was bred in 1975 from Flori v Bernetta sired by Dani von der Sagegasse. The litter contained DK Ch Danettas Jucky, who was the dam of NK Ch Danettas Laro and Dk Ch Danettas Jonni who was the dam of Dk Ch Ponti.

The first “Sennettas” litter was born in 1984 with Jens with his wife Lisbet. In this litter were the top winning females, WW ’86 Danettas Urte and her litter sister Sennettas Ursula who won the Res CACIB at the World show in Innsbruck. Together, they have had considerable breeding and showring success with many Bernese owned and bred by them, including Twice European Winner, Int Ch Danetas Floggy (born 1980), Int Ch Danettas Pazuzu (WW ’85) and the sensational twice World Winner and twice BOB at Crufts, record breaking top sire/ top producer, Int Ch Sennettas Sixten (born 1995) whose female line goes back five generations to Heika von Bernetta, one of the excellent foundation females Jens purchased from Alice Moser.

Jens qualified as an FCI judge in both Denmark and Germany in 1981, originally starting out with the 4 Sennenhund breeds. Lisbet became fully authorised as an FCI for Berner Sennenhund in 1991. Today, both are passed to judge a number of breeds, Jens for all breeds in FCI Groups 2 and 5 which correspond to the Working Group. Lisbet. FCI Group 2 and Group 10 as well as a number of breeds in FCI Groups 1,5, 6 and 9. Both have judged Bernese Mt Dogs extensively all over the world. They are looking forward to judging in the UK in September, at the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of GB 2022 Championship show.

.

If Jens and Lisbet cannot agree on any ‘Best in’ decision, as you can read below, we have an illustrious referee in the extremely experienced Satu Ylä-Mononen (Ricarron kennel, Finland)

Mrs. Ylä-Mononen began her experience in purebred dogs in her native Finland in 1982 exhibiting Bernese Mountain Dogs.   In 1999, she became a judge and is currently licensed for a number of breeds across FCI Groups, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8.  She has judged in numerous countries around the world, spanning Europe, Australia and North America, including at the World Dog shows, European Winner shows, the World famous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York, USA, as well as officiating at National breed specialties, both in Finland and overseas.

Mrs Ylä-Mononen, a world renowned, successful breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs (prefix RICCARRON), has bred several European, World and International Champions.  She has owned/co-owned also Newfoundland Dogs and Border Terriers.

In 2000, she was awarded the Vuolasvirta Breeder’s Plaque by the Finnish Kennel Club for meritorious breeding and The Finnish Dog Breeders Club Breeder’s Plaque for meritorious breeding 2005 as first Bernese breeder in Finland.

Over the years, she has been actively involved in club work, serving as secretary in the Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dog Club of Finland for 10 years, then as President of the Breeding Commission (Bernese Mountain Dog) of Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dog Club of Finland for a duration of 9 years.    She is the recipient of the Silver Medal from both the Finnish Kennel Club and the Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs of Finland, awarded in recognition of her meritorious service to club work.

Under the auspices of the Finnish Kennel Club, Mrs Ylä-Mononen has held office as vice president of the Breeding and Science Committee and as member of the DNA Working Group and the Eye Diseases Working Group.

To date, she is president of the Finnish Dog Show Judges’ Society, as well as a member of the Finnish Kennel Club’s Show and Show Judges Committee. She is an Hon Member of the Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs of Finland, holds a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences and works at Tampere University Hospital as a research coordinator.

This show is accompanied by a Limited Obedience Show judged by Dave Pierson.

David has been training dogs since the late 90’s, starting with a rescue Collie X/GSD named Moses, in obedience at companion shows. He found this a complete eye opener and began his entry into the wonderful world of activities that are available for our faithful companions.

Over the years David has shown his dogs Moses, Max, Pip and Amber in a variety of obedience, conformation and heelwork to music. Max excelled at heelwork to music, in which he came second in the Inter Regional Championships for the South East Region. Pip reached the Kennel Club Special Pre-Beginner Stages in 2014 and the National Obedience Class Finals in 2015. She also reached A&B in open obedience shows and auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, with heelwork to music! In which she has a first in starters. Amber is still young, currently 3.5 years old. Whilst she has done basic heelwork to music, and is at novice and A in obedience, her forte is man trailing and scenting, which they are currently still learning.

In addition to exhibiting, David has spent time as a club secretary of a companion dog training club and is a trainer and examiner for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme. He is also a student member of their Accredited Instructor Scheme, waiting to be assessed, and an Advanced Professional member of the PDTI (Pet Dog Training Instructors).

David has been judging at companion shows since 2008, becoming ’official’ in 2016, passing the Kennel Club’s obedience judge examination. David marvels at the great bond between owners and their faithful companions, and looks forward to seeing the handlers at the Bernese show, and wishes them all a great time with their dogs.

We are extremely grateful to all our generous sponsors of this show.
