As part of our Golden Jubilee celebration eventhttp://bernese.co.uk/events/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

we were proud to present the first ever UK

Swiss Breeds Event

& Fun Dog Show

Both events generously sponsored by

Judge: Jenny Shorer-Wheeler

Swiss Breeds Event Manager: Chelsea Hickling

This event successfully took place alongside the two Championship shows being held at the same time. For the first time in the UK all four Swiss Mountain Breeds were in the same place and able to be compared together. Thank you to the other breeds for being a part of our event

We would like to thank Jenny Shorer-Wheeler for her judging of all the classes at this historic event for the Swiss breeds in the UK and everyone who supported all the Saturday activities away from the shows.

Reports and photos of the show ring events to follow.

Meanwhile. at the same time the Character Assessment, with assessor Julie Aspinall, and the Good Citizens Dog Scheme Bronze Awards assessed by Denis Smith were being held. When you throw in the working cart course at the other end of the field, the other side of the two Champ Shows and all the club and trade stands, have we ever had so much happening on the same field at the same time.

Our sincere thanks must also go to Chelsea Hickling who volunteered to manage the show ring activities for us, and for lots of other help with the whole Golden Jubilee event.

The following photographs are all courtesy of Wendy van Dijk, a Dutch photographer and visitor to our Golden Jubilee. Thank you Wendy.

Swiss Breeds Match Report

I was honoured to be asked to join the BMDCGB for their Golden Anniversary celebration event, and excited to be judging the innovative Swiss Breeds match.  This was a really great way to include the less well known (in the UK) Swiss breeds, and it was wonderful to have representatives from all 4 breeds present.  The sponsorship from Burns and Artero was most impressive and the beautiful rosettes featuring the distinctive Swiss cross were I’m sure appreciated by all the exhibitors.

There were 3 Greater Swiss participating, a male puppy dog of 10mths who was nice for overall make and shape, he and his handler gave it their very best effort in the ring and with a little more practice I think they will come together nicely.  My Best Of Breed was the Yearling bitch, she won  this for me on her overall moderation, she had a lovely shaped eye, had a feminine head and well put together.  The Open winner was an older bitch who was also nice for overall make and shape, I just felt her a touch heavier all through.

In the Bernese there were 13 competitors all together.  The Puppy Dog stood alone, but excited me on the first go around the ring for his clean, balanced movement.  He was a little reluctant to be gone over but with the help of some cheese he began to be persuaded.  I do his owner is able to work on his shyness as I thought him quite a lovely puppy.  Best Puppy In Match and RBOB.

The Yearling bitch was another smart prospect with lots to like, in super coat and condition.  At the moment she is a little proud of her front feet on the move, which I’m sure will settle with maturity.

In Open I had 8 Bernese to chose from, a mixture of those new to the showing experience and seasoned show dogs.  I found 4 for my placings who all very much filled my eye and had little to separate them.  I later found out I have done a couple of them well at Open shows in the past.  My winner was an exciting bitch who is so well put together and with an extra level of showmanship that is bound to get her noticed.  BOB and 3rd Best In Match.

In Veteran I had two lovely Bernese, my winner was the soundly made male who was in beautiful coat and condition and really enjoyed his time in the ring.

For the Appenzellers, all 3 representatives of the breed were together in the Open class.  Not yet a recognised breed here in the UK, the dogs and owners were all extremely game and accepted a bit of guidance on how to get the best from their charges, and it was a delightful introduction to this smart little Swiss farm dog.  My winner was a Havana brown bitch, correct square proportions with appropriate moderate angulation, good colouring, distinctive curled tail and very sound on the move once she got the hang of it.  She rather stole my heart and ended up Best In Match.

In the Entlebuchers we had a nice puppy dog who was part kangaroo!  When he did keep all four feet on the floor he had a nice typical shape, and a nice brisk action.  Yearling was won by a nice bitch who again showed good positive action round the ring, and a nice typical shape.  Open was won by a very smart bitch who was extremely well schooled to show off her virtues.  She has a lovely eye shape, is well put together and displays a super workmanlike action on the move.  You could certainly picture her doing her job!  She was BOB and Reserve Best In Match.

Veteran was a dog who again was an excellent showman, will plenty to like in his overall make and shape.  A little round in the eye but overall liked him enough to award him Best Veteran in Match.

Thank you to all the exhibitors for bringing your dogs, and to the Club for the invitation, it was a lovely and unique appointment.

Jenny Shorer-Wheeler.

……………………………………………………………..

BELOW, PURELY FOR REFERENCE & INTEREST, IS SOME OF THE ADVANCE INFORMATION POSTED PRIOR TO THE EVENT

The Swiss Breeds Event allows us,  for the first time in the UK, to celebrate the four recognised Swiss Mountain Dog breeds together (Bernese, Entlebucher, Appenzeller and Great Swiss Mountain Dog).

In order to enter this show, dogs should be KC registered and will compete firstly within their breeds to find the Best of Breed, Best Puppy in Breed and Best Veteran in Breed. Thereafter, each of the dogs awarded ‘Best of’ will compete to be awarded Best in Show, Best Puppy in Show and Best Veteran in Show.

Some information on this event is in the Planning booklet but more can be found on the flyers for the event repeated and available below.

Open to download or print Swiss Breed Event Flyer

Also we have a 10 class Fun Dog Show for dogs of all kinds, to celebrate all dogs, regardless of breed. This show will have a relaxed feel, and dogs will compete in classes such as ‘Loveliest Lady’, ‘Dashing Dog’ and ‘Waggiest Tail’, (the sort of classes normally seen at our Garden Party).

Open to download or print Fun Dog Show Flyer

Entries to the above Event and Show will be taken on the day (payment by cash or card).

Additionally today there will be Bronze Good Citizens and Character Assessment available to have your dog’s character and behaviour  credited.

Why not stay over and make a day of it or make your visit part of a stay in the beautiful Forest of Dean. We still have camping vacancies and lists of local accommodation and evening events to enjoy on Friday and Saturday.

See the advance planning booklet for more details of all the timetabled events but Saturday evening is billed as

‘After the shows’

After a long day of dog shows, we invite you to join us for a laid back evening with hot buffet style food and drinks. The evening will feature a fun ‘carting surprise’ from the carting group and a Bernese Heelwork To Music display by well known competitor Sandra Hallam and her amazing ‘Fizz’.

Tickets to this event are £10.00 per person, and like the camping must be booked online ahead of the event and will include the cost of the food.

If you’d like to start your stay with Friday evening we offer

The Great British Fete

You are invited to join us for another traditional British tradition of ‘hog roast’ wherein pork is slow roasted to release its wonderful flavour, and is served in a sandwich, alongside optional toppings of stuffing and apple sauce. For dessert, we will cut our Golden Jubilee Celebrational Cake, and all enjoy a sweet treat.

Alongside the meal, we invite you to take part in an evening of games and parades, in homage to our wonderful breed. We will have a Champions Parade, in addition to a Torch-lit Carting Parade, which cannot be missed (further information below). Be sure to bring your spending money so you can bid on some fantastic items in the Health Auction, raising much needed funds for the Bernese Health Initiative.

This event will have a stocked bar. All alcoholic drinks must be purchased from the bar.

Tickets to this event are £15.00 per person, must be booked online ahead of the event and will include the cost of the meal.

Health Auction

Everyone in attendance at this event will have a shared appreciation and love for the Bernese breed. As with most things, whilst we may consider ourselves to have the perfect breed, even perfection can be improved upon. With Bernese, a major concern to all owners is health and longevity. There are many people around the world working hard to improve Bernese health, and to ensure they are able to live long, healthy lives, whilst retaining our breed type.

At this event we will be holding an auction for some wonderful items. 100% of all proceeds will go directly to the Bernese Health Initiative, therefore we ask that you all dig deep, and keeps those hands raised, with bids to improve Bernese health for the future.

Celebration of Champions

Being a Champion is the highest recognised award a dog can gain in the UK show ring.

Tonight we will celebrate Champion Bernese Mountain Dogs and other Swiss Breeds from around the world. All qualifying Champions will take away a momento of the evening.

Participation in this celebration event is by qualification, and prior registration via SumUp, only. If you would like your Champion to feature in the Celebration of Champions, you must book your tickets at a contribution of £5.00 per dog,

Torch-lit Carting Parade

We are happy to welcome Carters from across the country, to perform a torchlit carting parade, which is not to be missed.

This will take place after dark, and will feature carts decorated with various lighting affects, resulting in a magical parade in our indoor arena. Not only will this cause a mesmerising effect, it showcases the skills of our carting Bernese; working with confidence and carrying out their ‘job’ in unusual situations, again, a testament to their character and training – it is most certainly not to be missed.

Participation in this event is free of charge, however advance registering is essential via SumUp.

Why not stay over and make a day of it or make your visit part of a stay in the beautiful Forest of Dean. We still have camping vacancies and lists of local accommodation and the evening events to enjoy on Friday and Saturday.

PLEASE NOTE the closing date for all bookings is 21 August 2022.
