June 2020 – The Kennel Club’s geneticist, Dr Tom Lewis has reproduced a population analysis of the entire UK Bernese population as registered at the KC from 1980 to 2019. This covers many areas but chiefly looks at the genetic make up of the breed over that period and the amount of inbreeding and genetic diversity we show.

The Kennel Club does provide an online tool to calculate the Coefficient of Inbreeding for any KC registered dog. However, it can be a bit clunky to use if you do not know the exact name of the dog you want to view and most dogs nowadays have overseas dogs in their backgrounds and the KC records for these may be limited.
There is an easier to use option available on Berner Garde which can produce CoIs going back up to 10 generations and has many, many more Bernese details recorded than the Kennel Club.
