The intense afternoon downpours will remain in the memory but also the way everyone just got on with things and coped as well as could be expected was a credit to everyone involved, not least our Judge Richard Hallam assisted by Stewards Mark and Lynn and Show Secretary Karen Bird.
So, we should not forget that, thanks to some great British stoicism, the show managed to get to a conclusion and the full results can be found here and will be the permanent record of the show long after the conditions have been forgotten.

Championship Show Judges Report by Richard Hallam
Well, after one of the hottest and driest summers on record, I think we will all remember the day the drought finished!! A big thank you to all the exhibitors, who I know, will have worked hard to get their dogs ready for the show AND somehow managed to get them in front of me still in show ready condition. The dogs coped superbly with the weather, cramped conditions, the tent, and the area slowly flooding, a credit to you all.
I would also thank you to the committee for my invite to this prestigious show, and the hospitality shown. Finally, a special thank you to my stewards, who had to work really hard under difficult circumstances to keep the show running like clockwork. All in all, I had a super day spending time with, and getting close to, the breed I love.

Junior Handling

Class 31 JHA Junior Handling 6-11 years (4 entries,0 absent)
It was a pleasure to judge this class with an entry of 4. There was a range of ability and experience that actually made the placings fairly easy to decide but every handler showed a positive attitude and enjoyed themselves which is how it should be and in turn made it a happy experience for me and everyone watching. All the handlers came into the ring looking very smart and can all be proud of themselves.
One general comment I would make is that only one of the handlers, the winner, responded to my movement to react and demonstrate an understanding of, for example, ‘shadowing’, – basically not coming between the dog and the judge, even when standing. I wasn’t especially looking for such things today but if progress in the world of Junior Handling itself is a target, some knowledge of the specific practices sometimes expected will be essential. I know, from my paternal experience, that the requirements of competitive Junior Handling competitions can be a little different to what is typical show ring practice.

1] Ella Baldwin, age 10 years, despite her years already well experienced in the ‘real’ show ring and it showed with a calm confident manner that would enable the dog to stand out in the judge’s view. Kept an eye on my position but also concentrated on the dog, ensuring she remained well presented to the judge, both standing and on the move. Tweaked the dog’s leg position when it shifted from being correct. Used the ring well when moving and came straight back to me controlling the dog in a very relaxed manner with a good even pace. A very polished performance and a worthy winner of this class and, even if there had been any entries in the older class she would have taken some beating for the overall Best Junior Handler, which I was delighted to award her.
2] Isla Baldwin, age 7 years, younger sister of 1] and I really loved the way big sister kept an eye out and encouraged Isla with gentle advice – no sign of any sibling rivalry here with each encouraging the other. Isla responded well and delivered another smooth performance controlling the dog at all times both standing and moving. Wandered a little off line when moving but kept up a steady pace that would make the dog easy to assess. A small development point going forward would be to keep attention on the dog but also learn to watch the judge a little bit as well and be ready to react to the judge’s actions. Overall though, a really good performance, well done.
3] Rosie Fairclough, age 9 years, very well turned out handler who had to work hard with a young dog who didn’t always help her too much. I was impressed how she not only didn’t get frustrated and kept trying her best to stand and move him correctly, but also kept smiling and showed a really positive approach. Despite her unsettled ‘fidgety’ dog Rosie was aware when he wasn’t standing correctly and tried to make sure he showed himself off to his best. She also managed to keep him going on the move using the ring well. With her attitude she will only get better and better with practice and experience and will be pushing for the top spots. Rosie’s hard work and smile were noticed and much appreciated, so well done.
Reserve / 4th] Winifred O’Reilly, age 6 years, the youngest and least experienced in the ring, I think I was told making her Junior Handling debut today. Made a big effort with real concentration to control and present the dog correctly and she will only get better with more practice and experience. I hope she enjoyed it and we see her again.
