25 Apr Hip & Elbow Scoring Schemes
Use of Overseas Hip and Elbow Scoring Schemes
April 2023
The KC health department is taking an informal look at the BVA scoring schemes and our responses to them. In Bernese we specifically stand out as we started with a very high percentage of dogs born from tested parents, but the rate of elbow graded and hip scored parents to KC registered puppies has been falling, particularly so since around 2015. The increased use of overseas sires and imports does not seem to explain this drop adequately.
The KC is, understandably, trying to track whether the drop in percentage of puppies produced from tested parents is explained by dogs being scored using overseas schemes and if this will continue. As it appears that many owners may now be using these schemes, for what most would feel are very valid reasons, this could have a serious ongoing effect on the validity of trend analysis and EBV confidence for UK dogs’ data.
If you are in the UK and have hip and/or elbow scored a Bernese using any scheme since the start of 2015, whether as a breeder or a conscientious non breeder, please take the short and very simple survey below. It should literally take no more than a minute for most people although people with lots of dogs might have to think a little bit more.
Please note, absolutely no details about you or your dog’s identity are collected, no identifying details about your dog(s) or any scores are requested, the survey is purely about taking a sounding on different scheme usage and the reasons for change. The survey is therefore completely anonymous and deals with absolutely no details that can be connected to yourself or your dogs. The replies from within our breed reveal no information about the sender at all and will be simply summarised by the Breed Health CoOrdinator and passed to the KC.
Please take a minute to complete this screen and help to reflect our breed positively at the KC by generating a good response.
Thank you very much.
